Man hit, killed by CTA Red Line train in Rogers Park

A 27-year-old man was struck and killed by a CTA train at a North Side, Rogers Park “L” station, said police.

The incident happened around 1:24 a.m.

According to CTA, the injured person was lying on a southbound track between the Morse station (1358 West Morse Avenue) and the Loyola station (1200 West Loyola Avenue).

Officers walking the tracks between the two stations found the man underneath a Red Line train stopped on the 1300 block of West Columbia Avenue, near Columbia and Glenwood Avenues.

The injured man was unconscious, but breathing, said an officer at the scene.

The power from Howard to Wilson was temporarily shut off while emergency workers attempted to remove the man from the tracks.

If more details become available, this article will be updated accordingly.

UPDATE: At 1:59 a.m., authorities counted 35 passengers on the train... no injuries were reported, but most of the commuters were said to be extremely "irritated" by the service delay.

UPDATE: At 2:04 a.m., the victim was listed in critical condition and paramedics were still working on him, said police.

The train operator, who wasn't physically injured, was described as "distraught". He also received medical attention, said authorities.

UPDATE: Around 3 a.m., power was restored to the "L" tracks.

UPDATE: The victim was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, where he later died.

Prior to being struck by the train, the conductor saw the victim sitting on the train tracks, reported the Chicago Tribune.

It's still unclear if the incident was an accident or a suicide.

  2. THANK YOU for this update. The red line station operators didn't tell anyone what was going on, the train operators didn't tell anyone what was going on, no updates about the delays were posted on the traintracker, nor were they tweeted. This was the only place that had any information about what was going on, and why they were running shuttle buses. I had 5 people huddled around me reading my phone on the shuttle, and we all relayed the info to everyone else, so the poor souls stuck on the FULL shuttle bus finally knew WHY. Thank you!

  5. Thats so fucked up. Were all human and all in this together. My friends 27-year old brother died & all passengers care about is the delay!?? its a hard world these days...have a heart guys please....
