Sadly, this tragic shooting may be gang or drug related.
16-year-old Andre Vasquez, a sophomore at Schurz High School, and his mother, Krystal Hethcoat, were shot Tuesday morning inside their Avondale neighborhood home on the 3400 block of North Lawndale around 8:40 a.m.
Andre Vasquez was pronounced dead nearly four hours later at Illinois Masonic Hospital.
The shooting left Hethcoat in serious-to-critical condition.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Vasquez, Hethcoat, and Hethcoat's 14-year-old daughter were leaving for school when one of the children opened the front door and two gunmen rushed inside the house.
The 14-year-old girl managed to escape; Vasquez and Hethcoat did not.
Three suspects, two men and a woman, were subsequently arrested.
When Chicago News Report searched Kethcoat's Facebook page for more clues about her lifestyle, CNR found several photos of young black men throwing up what appears to be gang signs.
Hethcaot is seen in at least one of those questionable photos.
In a display of support, several family members have changed their Facebook profile pics to photos of Hethcoat and her slain son, Andre Vasquez.
Trenton Hearn, who is listed as Hethcoat's brother on Facebook, asked everyone to pray for his critically wounded sister.
"Please lend us your strength and give a small prayer for my sister tonight so that whomever you pray to may hear your blessings and make by big sis ok," said Hearn.
According to a reliable source, the Avondale shooting appears to be tied to drugs and gangs.
Really ugly. The gang and drug culture sure produces some revolting scenes. When something bad happens there's usually a scramble to revise the Facebook contents so as to sanitize it.

ReplyDeleteAll of the media spin and assumptions of gang affiliation aside, it really boils down to a very sad truth--a 16-year-old boy was killed, his mother is fighting for her life, and an entire family will never be the same again. My deepest condolences to the family.
ReplyDeleteSeeing this story was a really sobering reminder of how small this world really is. I take the 152 Addison bus to work every day, and from this photo immediately recognized Andre since very, very often was on the same bus as me. Granted, I obviously didn't know him personally in the least bit, but still recognized him as the polite young man who always offered his seat to other passengers and said "Hello" and "Thanks" to the bus driver.
Like I said, I didn't know him at all, but someone who was able to make that impression on a total stranger must have been an ultimately good person.

Nowhere in the story does it say anything about the young man being gang affiliated nor anything about his facebook page containing images of gang signs. Read the story. Both pages are private and you can not really see any pictures and what you can there are no gang signs. They wont tell you Andre was a A and B student with a 4.0 GPA. While I'm no journalist, I don't see the problem with looking at her pictures on the facebook to get an idea of what this woman is like. I mean, what better way to learn about someone than by looking at that person's own advertisements of themselves? For what its worth, I went onto the mother's facebook (it's not private) & looked at her pics, and yeah, they are full of her hanging out with guys throwing out gang signs - and most are in a folder called "Money Muthafukn Mike!"
ReplyDeleteAgain I don't know these people or even live anywhere close to the neighborhood that this happened in but I am intrigued by this story. If it turns out that mom was involved in gangs or with people in gangs, shame on her - it cost her son his life & could have done the same to her daughter. Hopefully that isn't the case.
Oh and a follow up to my comment that went up at 12:29, I don't think the race of her friends that she is shown with on facebook matters, but it does matter that they are throwing out gang signs, something that non-gang affiliated people simply don't do (these are grown adult men in the pictures with her, not teens or little kids). So I wouldn't care if those guys are black, white, hispanic, asian, purple, etc., but I would care if they are people who are involved in gangs.

It is really sad to see how cruel and inconsiderate people can be, its amazing to me that someone can say such irresponsible things about a grieving family in their time of mourning! Obviously they either don't live in the city or have no children! Imagine this is your family and these things are being said about them, think before you speak people! I used to go to school with Krystal. I am so sad for the family. May the young soul of her son rest in eternal peace. God please help the family especially Krystal's little girl during this horrifying time, so they may cope and move forward with their lives. How dare you say such mean and hateful things about this family with out even knowing the real story, without knowing the family personally. No matter what the situation was, a boy died, a mother is fight for her life, and a family will never be the same. We should all be sad if not for the family, for our entire society.
Our children are a reflection of ourselves. I met the daughter who got away while on a camping trip in Wisconsin with my daughter's Girl Scout Troop. She was a very articulate, well mannered, sweet little girl. I have never met Krystal or Andre but, just by meeting her daughter, I could tell that she was AT LEAST a good mother. These are the types of stories that someone should hear before they cast judgment on others, if they must. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!

Unbelievable how cold-hearted people can be. No matter what the situation was a little boy lost his life in a horrific way. No child/adult/human being deserves to have their life taken away by another, what gives anyone the right?! ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct, due to decades of incompetence and corruption of our politicians, combined with straight theivery by both the black and latino "communities" here of tax dollars, I do get to support them for the rest of their shitty lives. Just like I was already supporting Krystal, who was an admitted welfare case for years. Which means I also supported her two bastard children, so at least I don't have to worry about paying for dope-dealin 'Dre anymore.
And even though I pay tens of thousands in state income tax to IL each year, not to mention the highest sales taxes & second highest property taxes in the country, at least I work and make a very good living. I own property which I will make money on when I sell it, and have money saved & invested. Which means soon, I'll retire and go back to West Michigan, which has low taxes, no ghetto minorities like Krystal & her peeps who shot her, and I have the right to defend myself. All while Chicago and it's ghettos continue to burn.
PS - my kid is Andre's age. He's never been in trouble with the law, he never sold weed in school & on the street like Dre did, and he's not dead. Shame on you. Maybe if you're wishing for his soul to rest with God in heaven in peace you should speak in a way that God would want to listen. ReplyDeleteOne of guys that killed that young child was my best friend I had just seen him a week before this happen we been friends for over 20 years. I talked to him over and over about doing crazy things. I would had never thought he would had done something like this. I write him to this day, he is paying for his mistake he didn't have to kill him period, no matter what that young child did. I hope the mother is better
