Explosive device, possible grenade, found in Portage Park home

Northwest Side bomb scare in Portage Park.
Police and fire were called to a Northwest Side home, after someone cleaning out an attic found what appeared to be an explosive device.

Someone going through their father’s belongings on the 5900 block of West Grace Street in Portage Park, discovered what looked like a grenade.

The 911 caller told police dispatch, they believed the item was “left over from the war”.

The Chicago police department’s bomb and arson unit were immediately notified.

At 10:02 a.m., an EMS Plan 1 was activated; which means at least five ambulances and other emergency services were called to the scene.

If more information becomes available, this article will be updated accordingly.

  1. If that were still live, that could have been a real disaster. That goodness for the bomb squad who put their lives on the line EVERY time they go check out a suspicious package.

  2. Timothy,

I think, "attacks" is "attic" and "belongs" is "belongings". :)

    Has this situation been updated?
