Early Sunday morning, police and firefighters battled a blaze at a North Side, Lakeview neighborhood high-rise.
A fire was reported at 3130 North Lake Shore Drive, around 2:06 a.m.
According to a responding officer, the fire was on the 12th floor, on the west side of the building.
At 2:14 a.m., fire officials were notified that residents on the 14th and the 19th floors were trapped inside the building.
CTA buses traveling in the immediate area of the fire were temporarily rerouted.
Two people were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital and one person was taken to St Joseph Hospital.
All three patients suffered minor smoke inhalation, said police.
However, according to the Chicago Tribune, two additional residents were taken to an area hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
UPDATE: At least two civilians and two firefighters were injured in the blaze. They are said to be in fair condition.
A fifth patient, who is at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, appears to be in very serious condition.

I wondered WTF was going on out here! Sounds like Afghanistan in this concrete jungle. How many squad cars/fire engines were called?
ReplyDeleteI hope all comes out well but what about the car flipped over right about there the other night? How TF did that happen?
That building is real sketchy since they started dumping the Section 8's in there.
ReplyDeleteis this the reason why this helicopter has been flying around for the past 45 mins??
ReplyDeleteReports of 5 injuries, now. Two in serious-to-critical condition; three in fair-to-serious condition.
ReplyDeleteI believe someone may have died in the fire.
ReplyDeleteI live here and on the 9th floor yet did not have any alarms go off. Tell me that's normal????? Can't be right.
ReplyDeleteResident here, there are no confirmed deaths yet.
ReplyDelete^^^ That's good news! Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteI live in the building. If I did not wake up to go to the bathroom and notice the smell, I would not got out. There is no fire alarm!!!! WHF!!!!
ReplyDeleteI over heard 1 person saying there is 1the confirmed death. Im a tenent as well.
ReplyDeleteFor the news media to keep thousands of people awake for 45 minutes to take repeated pictures of the fire shows their stupidity and lack of interest in their welfare by the jackass who gave the approval to continue alloying people trying to sleep.
ReplyDeleteI had lived there 7 years ago and glad to have moved out. So many city and fire code violations. We moved because we were not getting enough heat and their solution was to open the oven. I had a newborn at the time and called 311 many times. We had enough evidence to just broke our lease two months early. They threatened to take us to court but we showed them all the information and said try it. They never tried. While living there our locked up bikes were stolen from the secure bike room, in the secure parking garage. They would not help. We also had our storage unit broken into and many items stolen. After it happened the first time they never told anyone and it happened to residents again. I feel horrible for those displaced and affected by the fire. I hope that someone will be found responsible and that the two firefighters and residents recover quickly.
ReplyDeleteI live in the building.. 1 death and 9 other people were injured.. Even though I'm in the 5th floor I never heard an alarm. There are smoke detectors but no alarm to evacuate the building. This is actually my 3rd day living here.. And I don't find acceptable that there are no sprinklers and no evacuation alarm in the building.
ReplyDeleteHey, Anonymous @ 7:05 AM... I am a firefighter. You were hearing one of the city's helicopters that was helping in our efforts to save lives and prevents the spread of fire.
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of all of the firemen, paramedics, and police officers who were at the scene, please accept our sincerest apologies for disturbing your sleep. Ass*ole.
Firemen are always trying to exaggerate their accomplishments. They expect some sort of hero worship when the fact is that a little water and a hose will put out any fire.
ReplyDeleteI guess we can't use the word e-x-a-g-e-r-r-a-t-e because it includes the dreaded g-e-r as in the N-word. Geesh. Censorship is ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI live in the building and the alarm never went off, which is not right. I was so thankful when someone went door to door banging on them til we woke up.
ReplyDeleteI have intimate, insider knowledge of the movement to place market-rate/section 8 people all over the city, but I'm afraid of getting sued over revealing it.
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say I changed professional affiliations because I was disgusted with it and other things associated with these sort of people.
I sense a long series of lawsuits against the owners of the building. I hope all the tenants file a class action lawsuit as they should.

That's ok, just try to be a little bit quieter next time.
....."I have intimate, insider knowledge of the movement to place market-rate/section 8 people all over the city, but I'm afraid of getting sued over revealing it."......
ReplyDeleteAn agent at one of the larger rental firms in the area "found" the perfect place for me but then mentioned the 10% "market rate/those people" deal. I told him I wasn't interested but let me know if anything else available. He never called back. I think it's all they have in tony E. Lakeview. Anyway, got until March 1st to find a suitable place, if thats' all that's available......uh, buh-bye Chicago. Literally quitting my job. No way, Jose! Not buying either while these housing prices crumble.
