The shooting occurred on the 1000 block of North Kedvale Avenue, near Kedvale and Augusta Boulevard.
An officer at the scene identified Cannon as an "offender", when referring to the injured boy over the police radio.
At the time of the shooting, police say Cannon was holding a BB gun.
Andrea McClay, who claims to have witnessed the shooting, said the Piccolo Specialty School student was unarmed and had both hands in the air, when police shot him several times.
McClay told WGN-TV that Cannon was shot eight times.
The Chicago Police Department said the shooting was justified.
Authorities said they ordered Cannon to stop, but he ran, then turned and pointed the BB gun in their direction. Forcing an officer to open fire.
Officers may have been on edge, because during the time the teenager was shot, cops were also investigating a shooting at 4326 West Walton Street.
That address is several blocks away from the police-involved shooting at Kedvale and Augusta.
Residents near Kedvale and Augusta were said to be outraged by the latest police shooting.
In fact, the scene was so intense, several request for back up were made, including a call for "rapid" assistance.
A large crowd was gathered at the scene of the shooting and cops were afraid things were about to get out of control, said one source.
Detailed information regarding the shooting on Walton Street was not disclosed.
However, Cannon was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

ReplyDeleteIf the kid had a BB gun on him, next to him after he was shot, I would assume the cops aren't lying about the kid pointing it at them. Now let me guess, people are going to say the cops put a BB gun next to him to corroborate their story as if they carry one in their car for the "just in case" moments. A 13 year old can shoot a cop just as well as a 30 year old. If the kid had a gun, regardless of fake or real, and pointed it at the cops then they took appropriate action.

Thank you for continuing to show the FULL picture! This is obvious proof that he was not just a "good, fun loving kid" as the mother is attempting to portray. ReplyDeleteA young man ran into my home after being chased by CPD ,police entered my home and arrested my teen age son ,for possesion on a weapon. that this unknown assailant ditched in our home will being chase now me and my family have to come up with 500$ to get my son out of jail and an unknown amount to keep his name from being tarnished with a felony arrest,ohh on top of that they did'nt arrest the assailant they let him go

ReplyDeleteWhy do you constantly talk about suburb kids getting away with murder? You are doing the exact thing you are criticizing other people for. The fact is, whether the kid was a good kid, had A/B honor roll, or whatever, HE POINTED A GUN AT THE POLICE. If one of my friends decided to run from the police and point a gun at them, I think they would deservedly get shot. I am not in denial like so many of you, his friends, seem to be. Having that type of attitude isn't going to help him at all, actually its likely to help him get shot again. If you really are his friends, when he gets out of jail make sure he doesn't have a gun on him or run from the police.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, maybe suburbs kids do get away with more in terms of dealing with the police. But this is because police are rarely shot and killed in the suburbs. When its your life on the line, you aren't gonna sit and say "hey he's looks small, maybe he is a kid on the A/B honor roll, and that gun might not be real". People aren't just judging him on a pic, thought it does add a nice touch, they are judging him on what the police say.

Stop making excuses for criminals and start doing something to change the situation in your "hood". I do know this, teenagers are completely out of control, expect people to provide for them, act like idiots in public and seem to have no respect for ANYONE. Change that behavior and perceptions might change. Until then, you get what you give...which is nothing! Get an education and YOUR life might change. There have been numerous comments that speculate CPD planted the BB-gun on the offender. Let me ask a very practical question: If you are a police officer that just wrongfully shot a 13-year-old kid 8 times, why would you plant a BB-gun on him instead of a real automatic handgun?

I just wanted to give a little update. I read on a Chicago police blog, I wont link it because that is against the rules, that the angel Jimmell apparently made a confession. According to this blog he admitted to having the BB gun. He supposedly also admitted to shooting out windows at a local school and cars around the neighborhood before police showed up. Lets hope other news agencies pick this up, sadly I doubt this will be the case.

ReplyDeleteI've been arrested with a illegal gun in MY possession when I was 18. I knew very well If i would of reached for it or pointed it at a cop I would of had multiple clips emptied into me! I followed every command that was told to me by the police for fear that if I didn't I would of have been killed. those experiences taught me a lot in life. I am now an upstanding citizen. This kid obviously did not listen and had the nerve to point a weapon at them. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure how this happened. The gang sign don't help his case either. you act like a thug you get treated like a thug end of story.

ReplyDelete"Replica gun" - because that's what these are. Even if up close & personal these replicas are plastic or fake or whatever, at night, in poor lighting outdoors, with a suspect fleeing, the cops are absolutely correct to believe that these replicas are real.
And the cops absolutely have the right to shoot first, rather than wait for the perp to shoot to determine whether it's real. I actually saw a number of comments on the Trib or CST website when this happened, stating that the police should have waited to have been shot at before determening the level of force they needed to reply with. Absolutely a freaking joke.
