Police said the shooting happened Friday, October 4, 2011, around 1:40 p.m., on the 300 block of West 104th Place, across the street from Parker's house.
The 21-year-old man was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead nearly an hour later, at 2:42 p.m.
At the time of this writing, homicide detectives were investigating a motive for the shooting, but you don't need to be Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (the main character in the TV series, "The Closer") to come up with a plausible motive.
Parker's online profile is littered with photos of him making hand gestures that look like gang signs.
Coincidentally, according to Parker's Facebook profile, "Boyz N The Hood" was one of his favorite films; and just like some of the hopeless characters in that movie, Parker met a violent death on the streets.
Um.......As far as I know those are general "cool signs" that are used as hand gestures when taking pics, similar to the peace sign or fist pump, check out alot of Hollywood promo pics and you will see the "cool guys and gals" posing with the same hand gestures. FYI.

More than half of the people who get shot were not the intended target. Lamaro was a good guy who was working a good job and all. I am white, grew up on the south side live up north now, never in a gang, have no idea if those are gang signs or peace signs....and feel all of the above is irrelevant...bottom line someone was murdered walking home yesterday and unless you have information that you did not share, it is clear that you have pre judged this man and in doing so have been quite insensitive. ReplyDeleteWhen I read the post at first and glanced at the photos, I took it on faith that the finger positions in the photos were intended as gang signs.
ReplyDeleteThen I read the comments from people who knew the victim. It is clear that almost all of them are very earnest in their disbelief that the victim was affiliated with gangs.
This moved me to take a look at the photos again.
In the first one, it is quite possible that the victim is simply pinching a small roach. The man to his right is exhaling and may have just passed the joint on. Fair enough.
The second photo is harder to fashion an alternative story for. There are three men in the photo and they are holding up three fingers. . . maybe. But why not the first three instead of the last three and why are they again each pinching thumb and index finger at the same time?
The real reason for this comment is to let some of the posters of statements defending the victim's lifestyle know that communication matters. Reading all of the posts, I was moved by the preponderance of those testifying to the victim's innocence of gang ties. However, only a few expressed themselves in the common currency of communication that is standard English. Some of the posters used language and convention so far from standard that I doubt, out of context, their posts would have been intelligible at all.
Ironically, the content of their posts was a cry against culturally based misunderstandings based on presentations.
Again, fair enough. In the public sphere when we as a society shine a spotlight on a case of a young person's life and the circumstances in which it was taken, we should take everything into account before passing judgment.
But in the day to day jockeying for control over narrative or particularly when you are defending a position in which you have a stake, the rule for everyone is if you want others to be persuaded of your position, you speak persuasively and employ your best rhetorical skills.
No one is obliged to take you seriously when you do not present yourself seriously.
The number and evident sincerity of the posts with atrocious grammar, syntax, logic, punctuation and spelling, persuaded me to look at the photos with fresh eyes. That might have happened for every reader if all Lamaro's friends wrote like the poster at 11:49 AM.
Language matters. Evidence: Many of you were hurt by the words of the original story. When you master communication, you will have mastered a powerful tool.
All of you all judging this man can go play in rush hour traffic with a club foot....If you did not know this young man, then you cannot speak on him. This man's life was cut short, and for anyone to come slander his name is ridiculous. His mom is hurting right now, his sisters are crying right now. TJ is now dead, not because of a gang, nor was he TARGETED....it was an accident, and unfortunately that does happen. This young man was going to school to better himself, and had a good government job. Doing much better than most of ya'll bums are doing right about now. Regardless of what happened, how it happened, he's gone, AND there is a hole in his mother's heart, and NEVER will you all with the negative comments EVER get to say anyting bad about him based on a couple of pictures. With that being said, not personally but through media sources, I know plenty of people who were shot and they were innocent. I'm sorry you misunderstood what I said and I will say it again, I don't KNOW any one who has been shot and killed. I only read about it or hear about it. Many of these young black people and there families do KNOW someone who has been shot and killed. Perhaps it's time to step back and take a look at what they are doing wrong as a family or friend and work to change it. It cannot be just a society thing. These bangers NEED to WANT to make a change. Is it easy? No, but how many more friends have to die before they see their lifestyle isn't working? Frankly, I'm sick of the violent mentality. The number of innocent children and adults that are shot or killed pales in comparison to the gang related shootings and deaths. The author of this article clearly wrote this based on opinion only; but to argue back and forth over this deceased mans name shows how much we as a human race are so divided. Come on people the death of this young man is already tragic for all that is involved; is it really necessary to try to convince each other of Lamaro Parker's character when most of you know the real Lamaro Parker. Lets be real; as an outsider looking in and based on these pictures one would came to the conclusion that Mr. Parker was in some way involved in negative activities. Does this opinion make him less that what he was; NO! Im sure that Lamaro Parker was the outstanding young man that many of you proclaim him to be. ReplyDeleteFor all those howling about the "judgment" and "hating" in the comments, you will simply have to accept that there is a significant number of people that are utterly fatigued by not just daily shootings, but multiple daily shootings reported among the black community.
People are unsympathetic to anything that even remotely looks like gangster behavior. Whether the victim of this shooting was a gang member or simply a poseur is irrelevant to them.
Glamorizing, imitating and indulging gangster behavior only strengthens the position of power that gangs hold in a community and the perception of that community. Italian and Irish immigrants distanced themselves from the near universal perception of gangsters decades ago, it is time for the black community to do the same.

I am also a professional who has since relocated to the suburbs and now a mother of a young adult son, so I can identify with both schools of thought expressed in this blog, however, Let's get one thing clear upfront. I have often visited the FB & Twitter accounts of my children and have on occasion had to pull rank and demand that certain images and statements be removed ASAP because they misrepresented who my kids really are as people, but for some reason this generation glorifies "thug life", even when they are upstanding citizens going to work and school and making good choices they feel as though they have to "keep it gangsta" on some level and they most often use social media outlets to express that, and before judging too harshly lets remember that we were all young once upon a time. I just thank God that there wasn't FB, Twitter or camera phones to document my ass foolery. FB users (young and old) words can't express how stupid it is of you to document your personal life, extracurricular activities, political affiliation, etc. on the internet. ReplyDeletePerhaps I should have said wise enough to know better because even if you don't know better be smart enough to take the advice of wise counsel. I'm well over 21 and I have the expectation that "our" young people learn to use a filter and play their cards a little closer to the vest, if you will. Like I said, I am a black woman from the hood. I understand the cultural differences and I have enough young naive people in my life to know that just because you're on FB with a henny bottle and some bent up fingers (I don't know what any of it means) doesn't mean you're a banger, but I also know that if that person applies for a position that I'm looking to fill, I will google him and make a split second decision based on what I see. I don't know if he is a gang banger, but I DO KNOW that he has very poor judgement and chances are if they lack the basic understanding that "we've got enough shit working against us" then I can't help that person. Someone has failed them long before the resume hit my inbox and sometimes we don't know what we don't know.

Also, it seems like a lot of people make dumb decisions, whether it be something like this guy's FB pics, or worse ones, like embracing & living a gangstaer lifestyle, bc there is not positive adult influences from at least one (preferably both) parents.
Until it stops becoming the norm for HS girls to have babies, and for fathers not to be present, the larger black culture will continue to pay for the misdeeds & poor choices of the welfare demographic.
I can't do anything but laugh right now at how ignorant people are. These are not the people that I was referring to in that statement. Lastly, you question what kind of mom I am and what I teach my children so I'll let you in on the short version. I have taught my kids that the deck is stacked against them from birth. I teach them that they have to work twice as hard and be twice as good at whatever they do just to break even. I teach them that they can't do what Becky and Brad does and expect the same outcome. I teach them to treat everyone with respect, but when it comes to business, trust no one, especially Becky & Brad because they will throw them under the bus for the sport of it, That they should work hard and pray harder. ReplyDeleteI seems you are/have taught your children to be distrustful of anyone other then those in your culture. Is that being a realist or teaching your children racism? I'm curious. I have taught my children to respect and love everyone, no matter what their color or background and yet, my son has been robbed and beaten by black thugs more often then I can count. He has received more stitches and broken jaws more often then I can count too. Guess what? he doesn't hate the black thugs and is far more forgiving of them then they are of him. I'm getting pretty pissed off about it though. It is not how I was raised or how I raised my children, who are grown men now. I'm also not a racist but am pretty sick of all the violence they commit against their own race and any other race for that matter. Sooner or later, people have just had enough of all this and express their distain for it in words such as these. I don't see you calling out the ones calling people names or using foul words towards commenters. Those are racist and hateful remarks as well, in my opinion. It has to work both ways if it's going to work at all. You seem very intelligent and must realize that.

Are these the same "black thugs" or random "black thugs" ? Might I suggest a relo or you stepping in and asking your son what he is doing to provoke these regular ass whippings. No, I haven't taught my kids to be distrustful. I teach them to protect themselves and to be smart and to be respectful of everyone that they encounter regardless of their race or social standing.
I will agree with you on one point and that is that the hateful comments are counterproductive regardless of who is making them, but I also understand that in the instance of this blog many of the posters are dealing with raw emotion and mourning for their loved one when they respond to the evil remarks of those that add nothing to the conversation and post solely to insult the deceased.

All I can say is wow!! A young man has lost his life and we are concerned about a picture or two that was posted on HIS page. I did not know the young man but my heart goes out to his family, friends and loved ones. It matters not if he had his fingers crossed or anything else. The truth of the matter is WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE ANOTHER PERSONS LIFE.....PERIOD!! The media is and has always been racist. They're random because he is an easy target. He trusts everyone and often walks home alone. Trust me, I have chased some of these cowards with a baseball bat and wouldn't hesitate to use it but he is a grown man. Mom can't be protecting him forever. He also doesn't call 911 because he doesn't want to get anyone in trouble. This city is changing me and is making me look at black people in a different way because of these thugs. I didn't know him, but whatever he may or may not have been, his family (possibly a very good family) is still sad. Here's the main point: NO ONE, except the killer & possible accomplices, knows why he was killed. Second, this goes to any commenters alleging Blacks are sub-humans, or to that effect: Why are you even posting your comments? You are not posting anything of value that Lower-class Black people can use to upgrade their status in society. It doesn't cost any money to give PRACTICAL ADVICE, instead of RACIAL INSULTS, to people that you & your children are sharing this city with. ALL racial groups benefits from things as simple as free, HELPFUL words.
To commenters that's confused about 1)why Blacks are statistically higher in criminal activities AND 2)why Whites (& other Non-Black races) are statistically higher in profiling Blacks is, IMHO, as follows...
1)Blacks is statistically higher in criminal activities, because BLACKS COMMITS MORE CRIMES, per stat. What that means is, crimes that's both recordable & reportable. Crimes that is easily catchable, such as Possession of Crack Cocaine, is MUCH easily recordable
than crimes such as Possession of Ecstasy, so therefore it's reported more often. Per Se, which Race has more dealings in Crack, & which Race has more dealings in Ecstasy? My point being, that Blacks has no more propensity to commit crimes anymore than any other race (Orientals with prostitution, or Whites with embezzlement); Blacks is just caught more, for a variety of reasons (stupidity, bad modus operandi, excellent crime prevention strategies by law enforcement officers or law abiding citizens, etc.) My uncle once said, (jokingly) "If you're going to be a criminal, AT LEAST be a smart, successful one!" My hope is that the criminal that killed Lamaro, isn't a very smart criminal.
2)Whites (& others, including Blacks) that profile against (usually poor) Blacks, is just wrong. You cannot determine a person's worth, based on statistics, just as I can't determine the next winning lottery number, based on statistics. It just doesn't work that way. It's true, Blacks are killing Blacks more than Whites are killing Blacks, so logically, this IS a problem that is mostly caused by OUR OWN Race, & the sad fact of watching a video of a brawl on Michigan Ave by Blacks indicate it certainly affects non-Black Chicagoans negatively. Here's the problem..In the mind of most young blacks, is teachings from usually-single parents similar to 'You will never get what you need, unless you take it, either from the Government or the next guy, if neccessary, by all means neccessary'. And I also think its sad & counter-productive, from a male's point of view, to teach kids to be distrustful of a person, because that person is born a Sharletha/Lamaro, or a Brad/Becky. As in Lamaro's case, he was obviously a good man to the people he loved, but obviously, in some way, wronged the wrong person at the wrong time.
Based on my post above, my advice to the family: Love & keep his memory, & learn from whatever mistake (whether accidentally or intentionally) he made towards his murderer, (i.e., DON'T blame it on status quo excuses, such as "Guns did this", or "This is racist Whites' fault!") because if you don't follow that last part of advice...well, those who don't learn from history, are doomed to repeat it.
