Garry McCarthy: Crime down 20%, no more cops, police union wrong

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy wants you to read his lips: "No new police officers!"

In a sit down interview with ABC7 political reporter Charles Thomas, McCarthy made it clear that if you are still waiting for the additional police officers that Mayor Rahm Emanuel promised you - don't hold your breath.

McCarthy said the Chicago police union's notion that more cops are needed on the streets, is old-time policing and a fabrication.

Chicago's top cop lauded an eight-week dip in crime in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood as proof that reassigning officers to high crime areas, is an effective means of crime-fighting.

Furthermore, McCarthy says the 20% drop in crime (that is probably due to the change in weather) is due to his brilliant strategy.

An estimated 80 to 90 police officers have been redeployed to the Englewood area.

Meanwhile, in places like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Uptown, citizens are being robbed on every street corner.

As someone who frequently monitors the crime on Chicago's North Side, I have routinely heard police dispatch operators struggle to assign police calls, because there aren't enough cops to go around.

Right now, there are probably 11,000 police officers on the force.

The Fraternal Order of Police wants an additional 2,300 cops on the streets.

In a city with nearly 2.7 million residents, the FOP's request hardly seems unreasonable.

  1. How do you define crime? Property crime vs. violent crime. Let's compare notes. Property crime is down because citizens are so concerned about VIOLENT crime, they don't report the property stuff. So, "crime" overall is "down." Violent crime is UP. And continues to be UP. Ride that wave, McCarthy. Ride that wave.

  2. There is 5 names of officers etched into stone, just from last year, that says why we need more cops. The criminals know the police are short. Why doesn't the Super?

  3. Really? Crime is down WHERE? All we have to do is look at this site and see it's NOT down WHERE we live. What's that saying..."you can fool some people sometimes but you can't fool all the people all the time?"

  4. This is a blatant lie. Send McCarthy back to New York. Emmanuel should have hired a Cop from Chicago to run the police department. You need some one from Chicago to know where the rats and scum bags hide and comitt their crime. MORE COPS PLEASE NOT LESS!

  5. Don't worry people. McCarthy is only here temporarily. His buddy Rahm gave him the job so that he would have the experience of being a police superintendent on his resume. He is going to run for mayor in NYC when Bloomberg is out. Pretty much the whole reason he doesn't give a crap about Chicago and the increase of violent crime.

  6. Give the guy a chance. Not being from Chicago is probably a blessing for you all. He's probably not accustomed to the droves of hoodlums & hooligans lying all over the streets, loitering in groups on every corner for hours on end and might do something about it. I never noticed that in Manhattan either (or even Detroit).

  7. Anonymous @ 2:58: Have you been to either of those cities?! There are muggings every second in Manhattan and the only people living in Detroit are criminals, shooting and stealing. Last time I was in Detroit, they set some hipster's car on fire with him in it, just for fun.

  8. @ Anonymous 5:01, you are so right. The only time you go to Detroit is to drive through to get to the Canadian side. If you value your life, you don't stop in Detroit.

  9. Well at least the CPD is upping their arrests so kudos to them.

  10. T., the cops in Uptown and in Lincoln Park, have been doing a great job catching these criminals before they escape.

I think mainstream media should make a big deal of every arrest that is made. That way, people can see just how hard some officers are working!

  11. I agree with you, CNR - the responses and apprehending has been swift. But how long before they are too tired to keep it up? I want fresh faces, minds, and bodies on the police roll calls.

  12. This guy is full of crap. Backlogs in every district. That means citizens calling for police have to wait because there are no available police to send. When citizens complain about long wait times for police service I tell them to call the Mayor. He doesn't want to hire more police because that would mean the city would have to make a payment into the pension fund for every new officer hired. McCarthy is busy furthering this propaganda hogwash at the request of the Rahmulain. Hey boss, shouldn't you be paying attention to that blonde filly in news affairs?
