Talent in Chicago's Subways: Part 2
In the subway at 188 North State Street, three men performed a moving rendition of Marvin Gayes' hit, What's Going On?; a song whose message is still relevant several decades later.
The Lake Street stop crooners were so good, several commuters stopped to give the trio a few a bucks.

Wow! I think those guys are the best subway singers I have ever heard. Thank you very much for recording and sharing this!
ReplyDeleteOutstanding:) I always pop for a few bucks when I see someone entertaining rather then just begging.
ReplyDeleteThat guy with the blue/white jacket & baseball cap on looks like the guy from part 1
Isn't this how Crystal Bowersox got started...in our subways?
T., Crystal Bowersox and R. Kelly started their careers singing in Chicago's subways.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I didn't record this video, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHooray for the subway..that I don't use:(
ReplyDeleteThere's a guy who sometimes preforms on the corner of Erie & Michigan who has all these instruments connected together and connected to his legs & feet. It's a hoot and he's pretty good as well as entertaining:) Always puts a smile on my face:)
T., I think I have seen that guy before. I wonder if he's on YouTube, too.
ReplyDeleteSome people are annoyed by street performers, but if they are talented and they aren't blocking my path, I'll happily support them with a dollar or two.
Me too. I absolutely refuse to give panhandlers anything, but StreetWise guys and people like in this video, I'll give 'em a hard-earned dollar. These guys are really good! The first one was kinda meh.
ReplyDeleteI do the same with Streetwise and they have some interesting articles in that paper. I love the guy at Diversey & Broadway, he's always pleasant. At least the streetwise vendors and the street performers are giving us something in return rather then doing nothing except begging and being annoying.
ReplyDeleteThere are some performers that can get quite aggressive if they are not getting enough donations. I recall that TinMan guy screaming at someone who only gave him a dime. I also have witnessed a fight between 2 performers over who was "working" the Jackson stop.
ReplyDeleteThere is a "rapper" there as well who has a foul mouth.
Back in the late 80s, mid 90s, there used to be an older white woman who sold Streetwise papers in front of what used to be Century Mall, which is now Century Shopping Center at 2828 North Clark Street.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but I liked her so much, I used to give her 10 and 20 dollars bills, but I wouldn't take her papers.
The first time I gave her a large amount of money, she looked at me like I was insane. Then she nearly cried.
I think she reminded me of my granny.
I wonder what happened to her.

ReplyDeleteI have seen him in action. Very frightening.
The entertainment usually falls into two categories:
ReplyDeleteRap, which very little of I like, and twangy acoustic guitar stuff (think of douchebags under a tree on campus)
If the performers branched out a bit I might care but as it is I don't. How about some dancing? Stand up comedy? Motivational speaking?
I've seen these guys down on the State/Lake red line platform a lot. Yep. They are GOOD! Thanks for the nice article. :)
