The family of an unarmed 22-year-old black woman who was shot and killed by a white off-duty Chicago police detective has filed a lawsuit against the city and the officer.
On March 21, 2012, around 1 a.m., off-duty Chicago police detective Dante Servin, of the 1500 block of West Albany Avenue, exchanged words with a group of people hanging out several feet away from his home, near Douglas Park.
At some point during the verbal confrontation, Servin brandished a weapon and fired multiple shots, striking Antonio Cross in the hand and 22-year-old Rekia Boyd in the head.
Boyd was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she later died.
Fox News reporter, Tisha Lewis, said Boyd's family called the shooting a "disrespect for black life".
According to Cross, Servin said he thought Cross' cell phone was a "weapon".
Shortly after the shooting, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the incident "appeared to be justified".
Chicago News Report contacted McCarthy's office to see if his opinion had changed, but we were unable to reach him by phone. In fact, the woman who answered our call claimed she never heard of Rekia Boyd or Dante Servin.
By now, most of you are familiar with Boyd's story, but who is Dante Servin?
Speaking on behalf of the Boyd family, attorney James Montgomery described Detective Servin as an "aggressive, intimidating police officer who provoked a confrontation".
CNR dug into Servin's personal life, but we weren't able to find any prior incidents of police misconduct.
However, we did learn that in 2010 or 2011, Servin, whose annual salary is $87,372.00, purchased two pieces of city-owned property for $14,501.00.
The land was acquired through the Adjacent Neighbors Land Acquisition Program or ANLAP, which allows homeowners in certain areas within the city of Chicago to purchase vacant city-owned lots for less than market value.
The lots are located on opposite sides of Servin's house and he used the land the expand the property around his home.
Several years ago, Servin, a member of the Chicago Police Department since April 28, 1994, helped train cadets for Mexico's Federal Police Department.
The Chicago detective "quizzed recruits on a tricky case study in Methodology Class", according to a US Today news article dated October 29, 2009.
Unvetted information indicates Servin may be related to a former Chicago cop named Mario Servin Sanchez.

Prior to the shooting, Cross apparently thought Servin was looking for drugs.
What were they doing at 1 am hanging out around someone else's property? These types always try to hit the ghetto lottery every time something bad happens. Maybe they'll turn a buck by trademarking her name like the Trayvon family.

There are savages of every race. there are racists in every race, yes black people can be racist too and why not it seems to be human nature? Yes there is more crime in the inner city but that is more about econimics and resources than race. Just look at the Italian, Irish and Jewish ghettos of the 19th and 20th century, they were rampant with crime. I can not begin to know your experience with black people and im sure some of it has been negative. But also know that many black people including myself have had negative experiences with white people and that at least in my case has not made me think all white people are racist or evil. I judge all people bases on merit not color and have friends of different ethnicity. And if you have never had a positive interaction with a black person then you need to get out more or vist different locations. I am not your stereo type of a black person who is violent. ReplyDeleteI know this is America and people can go where they want, but I'm suspicious of non-lowincome white people in an lowincome black area unless they are city workers, father Phlega of st sabina, liberal social workers, or missionaries/evanglisits. Usually everyone else avoids the area. Was he himself up to no good. Was he friends with someone or dating someone in the area? If not any on these he was up to no good. It must be explained why he was there?
If blacks are so great, why do they want to live in white neighborhoods? I have never met a white person who wanted to live in a black neighborhood.

ReplyDeleteI suppose I had a different upbringing than some Black kids,my parents always taught me that some people will always try their best to lower you in their eyes.They will cite the worst behavior seen in other Blacks and try to attack you with it,all the while disregarding the evil acts committed by people of all races,everyday.The thing to remember is that what THEY say has no bearing on YOU as an individual.The fact that they lump us all into one group that acts the same way at all times attests to their ignorance.
I don't know the details of this case,I don't even know the officer's race.Until I do know more,I'll reserve absolute judgement.It is a tragedy nonetheless.
All the same,to those who take offense at some of these extreme statements...Take it where it's coming from.If you know you don't act they they say you act,then that's all you need to carry on and keep living your life.Taking cheap shots at someone's ethnicity isn't confined to African Americans. ReplyDeleteThis cop was known in the Little Village area (during the 1990's) as a trigger happy- rogue cop who would do anything and bend laws to get his man. I personally came across this detective and witnesses his intimidation tactics & harrassment. Hopefully they take him for everything he has because he has build his empire on destroying other people's lives.
