Cops: Thief puts stolen bike on Craigslist, tries to sell it back to victim

When an alleged thief, who apparently posted an ad on Craigslist, agreed to meet a potential buyer at a North Side convenience store, he got more than he bargained for.

Saturday, around 10:10 a.m., a man called police from the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 5562 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago's Budlong Woods neighborhood.

The male complainant said the offender who stole his bike and put it on Craiglist had just fled the scene.

The suspect was described as a male Hispanic with black hair, approximately 5'9", and 130 pounds.

The alleged bike thief was last seen wearing a brown coat with a zipper in the front and multicolored pajama pants.

According to a responding officer, the purported offender told the victim that he lives on the 2600 block of West Catalpa Avenue.

Here's some good news: during his encounter with the alleged thief, the victim managed to take his bike back.

  1. I read a similar story a few weeks back. Some woman's bike got stolen and she found it in the For Sale section of craigslist. She set up a meeting with the guy to buy it, and when she got there asked to take it on a test drive. Then she just kept riding home once she got on the bike!

  3. if you ever have a bike stolen, go to Wolff's Flea Market at Allstate Arena, summer sundays. Be sure to put your info rolled-up on a piece of paper, inserted into the handlebar tube, or somewhere inside the bike frame. I see some guys with the nicest bikes for sale.....

  5. What's the difference in Craigslist and the abundance of "pawn shops" Chicago has all over? Or the store up on the beloved Bryn Mawr Historic (?!) District that has a sign in it's window that they "unlock phones at competitive rates" while they hoot/holler up there about a Subway moving in across the street?

Ya'll are soooooo behind every other urban area in America it's almost humorous - but scary at the same time.

  6. Q: Why don't you run over a black kid on a bike?

A: You don't want to damage your bike.
