Van catches fire near North Side, Lakeview Synagogue

Around 3:35 a.m., a van caught fire in Chicago’s North Side, Lakeview neighborhood.

The burning vehicle was reported by a Chicago police officer.

The van was parked on the 500 block of West Strafford Place, near Strafford and Lake Shore Drive; right next to the Temple Sholom of Chicago at 3480 North Lake Shore Drive, said police.

At 3:41 a.m., an officer at the scene requested the Chicago Fire Department’s estimated time of arrival, because the van’s wheels were starting to “pop”.

Authorities ran the vehicle’s license plate and learned it was stolen August 21, 2011, from the 3100 block of North Kostner Avenue.

The vehicle’s owner was notified.

Traffic at Addison and Lake Shore Drive, as well as traffic at Hawthorn and Lake Shore Drive, were temporarily blocked as firefighters put out the blaze.

Traffic closures were reopened around 4:02 a.m.

According to an officer at the scene, a second vehicle was also damaged by the fire.

  1. Freak accident or another Times Square fizzle? Sadly, I feel that it won't be long until we get hit again.

  2. The van was stolen. More than likely, they were simply trying to destroy evidence. I certainly hope this has nothing to do with terrorism.
