According to police dispatch, the assault happened on the 3200 block of North Halsted Street, near Halsted and Belmont.
Police described the attackers as four black men.
One offender has an Afro with a blond streak in it.
Officers searched the area, but they never found the perpetrators.
It's unclear if the victims were attacked during a robbery or an attempted robbery.
Last month, a woman was maced on the 700 block of West Aldine. Her attacker was also wearing an Afro.
Approximately 30 minutes after the attack at Halsted and Belmont, police were called to the Belmont Red Line "L" station at 945 West Belmont.
An estimated 35 to 40 people were said to be blocking the north entrance and refusing to let passengers exit or enter the station.
This is really amazing. Just days after all the hubbub over the videotaped attack they're at it again.

Coming into neighborhoods to JUST create problems for the residents who live there is totally UNACCEPTABLE, INEXCUSABLE and a REFLECTION on their culture...not that they care because IF they did, they would do something about it. Being "PC" is not working, has NEVER worked and when people try to be "PC" these ghetto thugs simply laugh at them. Give them what they give...NOTHING! Thank you towanda. This is not only chicago. Checkout whats going on in Charlotte, St. louis and Atlanta. This has been discussed for many years. When we allowed crack cocaine destroy our homes and communities 20 years ago we never thought a bout this being one of the consequences.

ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you about education and jobs, you seem to forget that BEFORE those two things can happen, it STARTS at home. If the parent/parents don't care, the children don't care and getting an education or a job will not be a priority. Children have to be taught respect, manners and responsibility at HOME. I cannot teach your children that...it is the responsibility of the parent/parents to do that. If that's not going to happen, than stop having children that society than has to deal with. It's very simple. "TEACH YOUR CHILDREN WELL"
When the children are not taught, what do we do? IMO, we have to reinvent the schools to take the place of dysfinctional parenting.

I'm from here and I have NEVER seen this city so out of control an, sadly, becoming more divided. Crack, poverty, the economy or discrimination is NOT an excuse for the behavior these ghetto thugs are inflicting on innocent citizens. It creates even more hatred and discrimination. This city isn't a bad place but it is becoming one and I for one, am pretty fed up with these "urban terrorists" creating fear in some of the law abiding residents here. I'm fed up with having to watch my back because they have NO respect for humanity and I'm fed up with having to alter the way I enjoy this city because I do not want to become an innocent victim. Anyone can change their behavior and turn their life around..ANYONE, they just have to WANT to and it's obvious they don't want to. It's easier to get your money by robbing, beating, mugging, shooting and burglarizing innocent people rather than having to get a job, ANY job, and earn it. There is something terribly wrong with that mind set. In this economy, it's not easy for anyone...except maybe for the ghetto thugs who take what they want.

The problem is 1) the parent/parents have to want to get their children involved in them and 2) The parent/parents don't seem to care what in the hell their kids are doing. Our school systems have become glorified babysitters and that's not their job. A child has to want to learn and that, again, starts at home. I could not do ONE thing until my homework was done. I also had chores that taught me responsibility and how to earn money. I got disciplined as well for disrespect and bad behavior. Now, I'm a law abiding participating citizen. and have NEVER been arrested. It seems these kids parent/parents have not instilled that in the current crop of ghetto thugs that is terrorizing this city. SHAME on those parents! Parent/parents are teachers as well. ReplyDeletePeople need to understand a little known truth - criminals like crime, its fun; its even more fun when the victim is of a race that you despise. Crime has nothing to do with lack of jobs, education, or drugs (except that drugs may disinhibit). Here's another one - junkies hook the drugs they are not hooked by drugs - they seek the drugs out repeatedly over a long period of time and then whine that they are "hooked" on drugs - stop believing the BS. Punish and ostracize - entire races if need be; its simply a moral decision - where is the tipping point? If, hypothetically, 90% of black males are one day violent criminals then it is absolutely moral to punish all black males - they will have brought this burden on themselves by not policing their own people. PC morality is paralysis because as long as there is just one innocent in the group, nothing can be done.

Unfortunately this may be the beginning of the end of Lakeview, and other middle class Chicago neighborhoods. If Chicago is going the way of Detroit, Cleveland, Gary, etc., the only viable option is to move to the suburbs.
ReplyDeleteIts too bad that one of the nations largest LGBT communities is under attack. But other gay communities have relaunched themselves to safer areas - Detroit's gay community is now functionally located in Ferndale thus escaping the dysfunction of Detroit.
There are nascent gay communities springing up in Evanston and Oak Park. Something to consider. The only question is - is that far enough? The key is to go somewhere without public transportation access from black neighborhoods. Its an easy train ride from the west side hoods to Oak Park.
The cops need to run every black person they see on the streets in Lake View out of the area. The cops know who those monsters are! It's time to stop playing cat and mouse with those crack babies!!!!!!!!!!

I think that there are some people looking for trouble who venture into areas where crime is usually low. Color of skin should not be a factor.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading the comments on all the sites that are reporting the increase in crime in the the Boystown neighbourhood. It further indicates and contradicts that we are living in a post-racial America. I am not sure what most of you thought, but this a city. Cities are known for crime, period. Should it be tolerated? No. Should the take a more PROACTIVE role in curbing crime? Yes. However, at the end of the day there isn't enough police to end all crime in a city. Let's say hypothetically speaking that his is the "end of Lakeview" as someone argued and moving to the suburbs is a solution. Unless you are going to create a new GLBTQ gated community in the suburbs cars and public transportation will provide access for the "ghetto thugs" to access this new and improved community. I will call it Lakeview 2. Unfortunately (for some) a gated Lakeview 2 is not going to be a reality. Hence, a strategic approach to curbing the immediate crime while determining ways to proactively curb is the solution. Aside from all of the day, fear is not a pass to be mean. Many of these comments on here are just plain mean including:

As a African-American gay male, who has to quote someone else "has NEVER been arrested," I don't particularly see the welcome mat being laid out for me in Boystown, which inevitably forces me to choose between my race and sexual orientation.
I don't think any good will come from bashing a whole race of people. Lakeview, while primarily white and hispanic, has always had a black population that have been an important part of our community. However, this group of thungs needs to be pushed out! They are using race as their "get out of jail free" card. We as a community cannot allow this to happen. We need to stand together, resolute and diligent to over come this crisis! Call 911 for all infractions you see on the street, no matter how small. I called yesterday when I saw a group of teams smoking pot on Roscoe and Broadway. The police allocate resources partly based on the number of 911 calls.

I think they sent out a text/twitter telling everyone to meet up there and cause hell with the commuters. This was like 5:30-6:00 Am when most CONTRIBUTING, hardworking taxpayers are going to work. The racism that I have read here today is VERY sad. While I understand the frustration of the community (both living there or regular visitors of the area), there has to be POSITIVE thinking and/or solutions that can solve this issue.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is not black youth. The problem is youth in general. These kids are out well past curfew in an area that is primarily for 21+ patrons. This falls on both the parents and the police to enforce. There are few ways to do this effectively.
1. Change curfew for minors (17 & under) to 9pm unless escorted by a parent. If the police identify a minor, he/she should be detained until a parent comes to pick up the minor. Infraction should have a tiered approach.
1st - 10 hours community service for both
minor and parent.
2nd - 20 hours community services for both
minor and parent.
3rd - 40 hours community service for both
minor and parent, plus a $250.00 fine.
4th & up - 40 hours community service for
both minor & parent, plus $500.00 fine.
By enforcing the rule on both parent and minor, the parents will realize that this affects them directly and hopefully encourage a more active role in their child's life. My parents knew where I was every minute of every day. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Another option I read the other day would be for the all the bars/clubs in the area to come together and order colored wristband (different color for each day) that is given to the person upon paying either cover or when they purchase their first drink (for non-cover bars. That would allow the police to identify loiterers from paying customers at a glance.
As far as education and jobs and all the other hoo-haw, all we can do is make those things available. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink."

I'm from this city and while I live farther north, I spent many many years in "BoysTown" before it was called "BoysTown". I watched many of those bars open up and spent many hours in them as a gay woman. I watched Broadway from Belmont north go from the gay businesses it use to be to what it is now. I was part of the "gay money" campaign back in the day and part of the development of what is now the ONLY gay area in this city. One think I know for SURE is that the area NEVER was like it is now and it's a total slap in the face to ALL the people who came way before these disrespectful ghetto youths who now want a "safe" place to hang out. They bring the very fear they're trying (so they say) to avoid. The word gets out that there is money in the gay neighborhood and now, ALL the ghetto thugs are inflicting their urban terrorism on innocent people. These ghetto thugs don't know the meaning of manners or respect and yet they want to be respected. You get what you give and right now, that "PC" stuff isn't working out, so now their going to see just how hard the gay community fights for what they believe in!

There comes a time when being nice just doesn't work anymore and calling it like it is sometimes wakes people up to the reality of EXACTLY what is happening, not only in BoysTown, but all over this city. That is an ADULT entertainment area, 30 million spent on COH and STILL it's not enough. Ask yourself, when is enough enough? Wrists bands might work but it's not a rock concert, it's an over 21 bar. Enforcing curfew is a start but ever heard of fake ID's? The police are overwhelmed in this city with all the crime being committed ALL over the place, they can't be everywhere all the time. It's very simple, be their eyes and ears and call 911 when ever something OR someone looks suspicious. Sooner or later, the ghetto thugs will blow their cover of "youth". There is NO reason on earth that ANYONE needs to be in an adult entertainment area who is under 21..period. They are not there to spend money, they are there to cause trouble and ALL the "PC" in the world will NOT change that. Why is it that our society has to ALWAYS adapt to the people causing problems? Isn't it time they are held responsible for their behavior? Here's a though, groups of 10 or more should be sent on their way. If this Gender "what ever" group is assembling to disrupt daily life in the city they should and can be classified as terrorist under the homeland security laws passed after 9-11. That would make these federal crimes with much greater penalties. Plus they should be able to confiscate and check all phone records of the terrorist to see all involved, even if not on-site at the time. This actually may be being coordinated from a much more established terrorist group.

ReplyDeleteI don't think this comment is racist per se. It seems true that SOME black yoots are doing just that. Making the observation is not an indictment of black people as a whole, any more than it is an attack on white people to point out that mobs of white supremacists have been known to seek out blacks, jews, hispanics and others for attack.

Way too many people forget those who have helped in their struggles and simply point out the bad ones.
OldFriend - I started to believe that this blog reflected the thoughts of the majority of Chicagoans, however I am now realizing that it's the same few individuals commenting. The people who typically respond on this blog are a little over the top to say the least, but behind their (possible) racial mantras lies some truth. We (I am an educated black male from Washington D.C.) need to take responsibility for our own culture/people. It sounds like Chicago is a complete unbelievable mess right now. Frankly, I couldn't care less what Towanda or Skokie Swift has to say about "Black Thugs" or "Animals" etc. It is our job to condemn this type of behavior not theirs. Where the hell is Jessie Jackson and the dozens of other black leaders who are quick to protest "racism" against black???
