South Chicago is one of the worst, most low-profile neighborhoods in Chicago. South Chicago doesn't get as much media shine as Englewood or Roseland, but trust me, the violence there is either on par or even worst. A different gang on each block in a predominantly Latino/African-American neighborhood... wheewwwww!!!... Hide your wife, hide your kids and fasten your seat belts when riding through the East Side... because they're killing everybody out there!!!
ReplyDeleteSkokie Swift, South Chicago and the Austin neighborhood are extremely violent areas. I'm old enough to remember a time when that wasn't the case.
ReplyDeleteTim, I agree! From what I understand and what I read up on, those areas were fairly decent with a substantial amount of hardworking considerate citizens and war vets. Just like Altgeld Gardens.
ReplyDeleteFor the most part, Austin used to be a beautiful West Side neighborhood, with a suburban feel to it. Most of the blocks were clean, quiet, safe, and well taken care of. The same goes for Chatham, which is now a virtual war zone!
ReplyDeleteIn the 80s, I knew several well-educated and professional people who owned houses in Chatham. When the crack heads started breaking into their homes and stealing their cars, most of them moved to the suburbs or downtown.
If you take the thugs out of Chatham, it's a beautiful well-constructed neighborhood. Sadly, because of its South Side reputation, most people would beg to think different.
ReplyDeleteEven if the local thugs were gone, Chatham is still near Roseland and Englewood and Austin is still near Lawndale, Garfield Park and Humboldt Park.
