Kidnapping: 1-year-old child taken with vehicle during car theft

A woman left her keys and her child in a running vehicle - now her car and her baby are missing.

At approximately 11:45 p.m., a woman’s car was stolen from the area of 5900 South Morgan Street on Chicago’s South Side.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the crime may have occurred at the Mobil gas station at 5901 South Morgan.

Police said the woman’s one-year-old child was in the backseat when the car was stolen.

According to video evidence, when the woman went into the store, a black man wearing a black baseball cap, a gray sweatshirt, and blue jeans, entered the vehicle from the driver’s side and drove away.

Authorities are looking for a red 2002 Dodge Caravan. The car may be similar to the one in the photograph. One of the front headlights is broken and the license plate on the vehicle is H 4 8 1 3 6 8.

The stolen van was last seen headed northbound on Morgan Street.

If you have any information on this crime, please contact the police, immediately.

UPDATE: At 1:21 a.m., police determined that the woman lied about the one-year-old being in the backseat.

  1. WOW! I hope that child gets out of this situation ok. How totally stupid of the mother to not only leave her keys in the ignition but leave her CHILD?! Don't look now but there is a bottom feeder lurking everywhere just waiting for an opportunity to move in for the kill.
When are people going to start being smart about their surroundings and do what they can to protect themselves? Why are people so naive? "Not going to happen to me" mentality maybe worked in the old days but now days people need to be on their toes.

  3. How many times does media tell us "Don't leave your child(ren) and/or pets in the car!", because of weather and car jacking?
