Suspicious Men: 1400 West Barry Ave.

At 7:20 p.m. a concerned citizen reported two suspicious men, or teenagers walking back and forth on the 1400 block of West Barry Avenue in Chicago’s Lakeview community.

The dubious pair was spotted near the intersection of West Barry and North Southport Avenues. According to the 911 caller,  two African-American teens appeared to be casing the block; looking into vehicles and apartment windows.

One suspect was described as 19-years-old with braided hair and was wearing all black clothing. The second suspect is 14 to 15-years-old with a heavy or stocky build. He was wearing a ski jacket with stripes.

Both teens were last seen walking westbound on Barry Avenue towards North Greenview Avenue.

On October 1, 2010, several suspects broke into a home on the 1400 block of West Barry, attacked several occupants and tried to sexually assault a female victim.

On December 21, 2010, a woman was robbed, beaten, and sexually assaulted in an alley on the 1300 block of West Barry Avenue.

  1. What's the deal with that area of Barry? Is it darker than most streets? it seems that area has been singled out for some reason. GOOD job to the people who are proactive about "suspicious" people in an area they really don't belong. Here's a suggestion people..HEADS UP and PAY ATTENTION to your surroundings. If they "look" suspicious, they probably are! 911 should be on speed dial on your phone. What's that saying.."if it looks like a duck...?

  3. Me too. Because I live right in this area. According to Everyblock there was also an armed robbery on the 3000 block of Southport on Dec. 12th around 11am. Anyone know anything about that?

  4. Barry is one of the few east/west streets that runs continuously from Sheffield to the river. Belmont and Wellington do as well, but they are too well lit and traveled. My guess would be someone who either used travel from the Belmont train station to school or activities in Hamlin park, and used Barry as a walking route. He no doubt noticed the lack of foot traffic, lighting and lots of places to hide. He prob. got a crew together. They have to be young--late teens or early 20s. The home invasion/sexual assault was pure amateur stuff. An older pro would never have done that.
