She's up and done it this time, she's pissed off the gays. People in politics in Chicago know you have to make a visit to Boystown or else you are finished. At least the Reverend James Meeks made it up to Ann Sather on Belmont a week after voting against civil unions to pay homage.

I'm not a big fan of CMB, every time she seems to be brought up there is some sort of scandal attached to her name. I thought she had fell off the face of the Earth until Mayor announced her retirement. She is not a contender for this race but between her, Meeks and Davis it has made for some interesting discussions.

I wish we could have a good strong black women as mayor of Chicago but unfortunately she's not it. Who I have been admiring and she may develop into something in the future is Patricia Van Pelt Watkins. As far as this race goes, Rahm seems to have this wrapped up or perhaps Chico might make some gains but that's about it.

  5. Lakefront, gotta agree with you there. She is over & out now. Do not piss off the gays. I was a part of that "Gay money" campaign back in the 80's when we were trying to get anti discrimination laws passed and the Feds were not happy to see millions of dollars come in stamped "GAY Money"..it worked:)

  6. Chicago needs a mayor that is tough on crime and fiscally responsible. The city needs someone who understands how to effectively crackdown on gangs.

A while back, CBS did a report on a 300 + million dollar CTA "tunnel to nowhere". The video AND the story have magically disappeared.

Basically, CTA spent a gob of money on a project that's been shelved. A CBS reporter recorded in the empty tunnel and incomplete construction.

That kind of wasteful spending has to stop. That money could have been used to hire more police officers or more security for CTA!

A few days ago, police were called to a "person with a knife" call or something like that. Do you know the dispatcher had to beg someone to show up because NO CARS were available?!

  7. WOW! that truly is pathetic and very sad. Seems we have no help sometimes. That "tunnel to nowhere" was the construction under block 47 or whatever it's called, something to do with the CTA, which is another organization that wastes money. I saw that as well and what a huge waste of taxpayer monies. Can't put more police on because "we don't have the budget for it" but we can dig a tunnel to nowhere. Amazing.

  8. Lakefront, I think Emanuel has this race in the bag. I'm not too crazy about Emanuel's personality. And his unwillingness to answer tough questions doesn't help. But right now, he appears to be the only candidate with a chance of winning.

So I was looking at who was running in the 46th ward and there are quite a few folks running for that seat. Anyone we should be paying attention to? I noticed a girl name Molly Phelan running, is she related to the old political Phelan from way back when? Anyone else we should be looking out for?

Here is the list from Progress Illinois on the candidate for Helen Schiller's seat.

    Michael Carroll
    James Cappleman
    Don Nowotny
    Befekadu T. Retta
    Mary Anne Phelan
    Andy W. Lam
    Emily Stewart
    Diane Shapiro
    Marc Kaplan
    Caitlin McIntyre
    Janice V. Thomas
    Scott Baskin

  10. The gays seem to be into Cappleman since he almost beat her another time. Plus, he's gay. Don't know about the others.

  11. towanda, I was thinking the same thing! People have been throwing Cappleman's name around LONG before Schiller ever said she wasn't seeking reelection.

  12. Oh yeah, that Michael Carroll USED to be a cop. Don't know anything about him but I'm not sure a cop would have any more influence than any one else, but ya never know. I think Cappleman will take the 46th, and Harry Osterman will take the 48th;)

  13. towanda & Timothy:

Is this tunnel related to Block 37 and the proposed CTA O'Hare Express El?

Yes, CTA spends a lot of money on junk: expansion studies, bus & el time trackers, cellphone access in tunnel stops, etc.

Yep! That's the one! :-) I cannot find the CBS video, anywhere!

  15. According to the Windy City Times, she did "make" the event..by phone. which was held up to a microphone. This, after patrons waited 2 hours before it was announced she would not be there in "person"! Apparently she was overbooked...because she's in such demand...

  16. I think, LGBTers can find a better mayoral candidate. :)
