Jimmy McCoy gives a menacing look in this photo, but he actually tried to do a good thing. Photo: CBS2Chicago |
From the moment I heard this fantastic tale, I knew there was more to the story. And thanks to CBS2Chicago, we have the truth!
On October 9, 2010, around 11:30 a.m., a west side Chicago man, fed up with what he perceived to be a delay in medical treatment for his loved one, jumped into ambulance No. 23, and headed for the hospital.
When the incident occurred, the ambulance was parked on the 4300 block of West Wilcox Street, in Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood. Paramedics were treating a patient who suffers from diabetes.
When 27-year-old Jimmy McCoy took off with the ambulance, with his relative and two paramedics inside, he thought he could get his relative to the hospital sooner, if he drove the ambulance while the paramedics assisted his family member.
After firetrucks surrounded the ambulance, McCoy was taken into custody without incident. He was later charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
Though I do not condone what McCoy did, I can certainly empathize with him. Who among us would not spring into action, if we thought someone we loved was in a life or death situation?
One more thing before I conclude this article, to the pseudo-journalists who made this man look like a carjacking crackhead - SHAME ON YOU!
