Fire at downtown high rise

Firefighters and police responded to a fire in a downtown Chicago high rise.

Citing preliminary reports, the incident occurred around 4:45 p.m. at 55 East Jackson Boulevard, between State Street and Michigan Avenue.

According to an officer at the scene, the blaze started on the 3rd floor.

If more information becomes available, this article will be updated, accordingly.

UPDATE: 5:08 p.m. - Police cleared the lobby at 55 East Jackson Boulevard… an additional unit was called to assist.

UPDATE: 5:13 p.m. - Flames extinguished… job coded as a 5001, other crime involving property. If this code is correct, it seems to suggest this may be a case of arson.

UPDATE: 5:28 p.m. - Officers were alerted that two people were possibly trapped in a 12th floor stairwell. The people trapped in the stairwell sent a text message to a friend and the friend contacted the police. At the time of this update, officers were trying to locate the friend who received the text.

UPDATE: 5:37 p.m. - Foot traffic resumes... vehicle traffic still temporarily suspended... no update on the people supposedly trapped in the stairwell.

UPDATE: 5:42 p.m. - All traffic returns to normal... appears people trapped in stairwell have been rescued... responding firefighters and officers congratulated on a job well done.
