Edgewater: Object in water prompts emergency rescue response

An object floating in Lake Michigan prompted an emergency response from rescue workers in the city’s Edgewater neighborhood.

Around 7:59 p.m., a 911 caller spotted an object floating in Lake Michigan along the 6100 block of North Sheridan Road, near Sheridan and Granville.

The object was approximately 150 yards into the water, said police.

According to police dispatch reports, the caller said he thought it was a body.

Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered the item was an “old raft”.

The raft was removed from Lake Michigan and the rescue efforts were suspended.

  1. What happened to the person on the "old raft"?

Oh nevermind. Maybe he had had enough and paddled to the other side of the pond where's it's cleaner and safer, ditched the raft 'cuz he sure wasn't returning to that kind of "diversity".

  2. I saw how this started. There were six individuals (five men and one woman)in the water, entering through that grassy park on the South side of El Lago. Three of them took the old raft (float) pretty far out. They were horsing around on it and it must have begun to lose air. So two swam back while the third attempted to paddle back with the half deflated float. When it appeared that they were no longer in danger of drowning, I went back to my own life. Apparently, he decided it was too much work and left it. An hour later, here comes Chicago Police Boat to pick up their garbage. Glad to see the CPD took this seriously, I just hope it didn't pull their resources away from anything important for this rescue.
