Fire reported at Edgewater high rise

Sunday, police and firefighters responded to a fire at an Edgewater neighborhood high rise on Chicago’s North Side.

According to police dispatch, a fire erupted on the 51st floor of the Park Tower Condominiums at 5415 North Sheridan Road, near Sheridan and Balmoral Avenue, around 8:14 p.m.

Preliminary reports indicated the fire started inside a bedroom.

According to fire officials, an occupant inside the condo unit sustained minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.

While firefighters worked the scene, police temporarily blocked the intersections of Sheridan and Catalpa and Sheridan and Berwyn.

At approximately 8:32 p.m., CTA buses normally traveling in the vicinity of the fire, were momentarily rerouted to Lake Shore Drive, said police.

If more details become available, this article will be updated accordingly.

  1. Have the incidences of fires in these highrises risen over the past few years or is this the norm? Just curious. Seems they have risen over the past few in my opinion.

  2. I don't know if the number of Chicago high rise fires has risen, but there have been several fires at this location within the last few years.

A fire broke out in this condo back in June or July of 2011, and in 2010, a woman died in a fire at this same building.

I wonder if any "Shelter Plus Care" mental patients are being housed in this particular building, they have a penchant for starting fucktarded fires.
Example: A guy in the Wilson/Windsor apartments was looking for something under his bed with a lighter. Hours later, a LOT of damage was done.
Yet, people were not legally allowed to beat him to a pulp over it.
Another guy gets drunk and puts a frozen pizza in the oven, passes out.
    Wha-lah, sexy fireman comin' atcha!

  5. Kinda what I was getting at. I wondered if they're putting those people EVERYWHERE now. I know alot of condos are being rented in Chicago because they can't sell. Things are getting no better (no matter what you read in the Trib) and was just wondering if they're taking on those "deemed ok" (but obviously are not) too. It's scary enough living next door to them on a first floor in Andersonville.

  6. You guys are fucking idiots.

Three fires in the last 5 years. Each time isolated to one unit or work room.

The first one (where the woman died) is rumored to have been started by her cat knocking over a candle. Nice woman who lived their unfortunately jumped up out of bed after being waken up, breathed in the toxic fumes, and passed out and died of smoke inhalation.

Second one was in an electrical room near the loading dock. No one injured.

This one I haven't heard anything on it yet but the fire damage was limited to one unit (although there was some additional water and glass damage I hear).

There's no one being 'housed' here. About 70% is owner occupied and most residents have lived here for years. There's 700 units in the building so its like its own little community. Maintenance is good, has a grocery store, community room, fitness center, indoor pool, two levels of indoor parking, etc. The building has a doorman and 24 hour security.

I work in real estate and have done business in the Edgewater community. This is a solid building.
