Near North Side and downtown crimes: August




The following crimes occurred on Chicago's Near North Side and in the downtown area, during the month of August. This information was provided by the Chicago Police Department.


Woman robbed leaving Apple Store

On August 1, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., a woman was robbed after leaving the Apple Store at 679 North Michigan Avenue.

The victim, a female in her 40s, was approached by an unknown male suspect, who forcefully took a bag containing a new iPhone, said police.

The complainant notified authorities when she got home.

A description of the offender was not included in the police report.



Woman attacked, thrown to the ground on Chicago's lakefront 

A female victim was assaulted and thrown to the pavement on Chicago's lakefront, said authorities.

The incident occurred August 4, 2011, at 8:10 p.m. on the 800 block of North Lake Shore Drive.

According to police, the victim was walking through an underpass when an unknown offender shoved her to the ground.

The thief stole the 18-year-old female complainant's black book bag and fled the scene.

The offender was described as a white male, 18 to 25-years-old. He was last seen wearing a black Under Armour t-shirt.



Cops find drugs on suspect in attempted robbery 

On August 5, 2011, at 10:40 p.m., a 36-year-old man was walking on the 1000 block of North Dearborn Street when another man grabbed him by the neck.

Based on the narrative in the police report, the victim was choked.

The offender demanded money from the victim, but the victim managed to escape and flag down the police.

Responding officers toured the area and found a suspect matching the offender's description.

The suspect, who was described as a 22-year-old black man, was positively identified by the victim, said police.

During the arrest, officers found what appeared to be drugs in the offender's right, front pocket, said the police report.

The substance was contained in six, clear plastic bags.



Man robbed while waiting for cab near State Street 

Authorities said a 21-year-old man was robbed at 2 a.m. while waiting for a cab at State and Ontario.

The robbery happened on August 7, 2011, at 1 West Ontario Street, said police.

The victim was waiting for a taxi when an unknown male offender snatched his Samsung Smart Phone out of his hand, said officials.

The thief was described a 25-year-old white male, about 5'6", and 180 pounds.



Man robbed, thrown to the ground on Dearborn Street 

On August 7, 2011, at 3:50 a.m., a man was attacked and robbed on the 1100 block of North Dearborn Street, near Dearborn and Elm Streets.

The victim was walking side-by-side with an unknown male offender, when the suspect punched the victim and threw him to the ground, said police.

Once the victim was subdued, the suspect went through his pockets, taking his cash and a cell phone, said authorities.

The thief was described as a "clean-cut" male black, approximately 30-years-old, 6'3", 220 pounds, with black hair.

The suspect was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt and blue jeans.



Robbers told victim to 'empty his pockets' 

A 21-year-old man was robbed near Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood, said police.

The incident occurred August 8, 2011, at 1:20 a.m.

The victim was walking westbound on the 100 block of East Grand Avenue, when he was approached by six unknown male suspects.

One offender struck the complainant in the face and the head.

When the victim tried to walk away, a second offender grabbed him.

A third suspect told the victim to empty his pockets.

Based on the information in police report, two of the offenders were described as male blacks, 16 to 18-years-old.



Attempted robbery at Streeterville neighborhood park 

A brazen criminal knocked a woman to the ground during an attempted robbery at a Streeterville neighborhood park, said police.

The attempted strong-arm robbery happened August 8, 2011, at 9:14 a.m.

A 60-year-old woman was walking through Lake Shore Park, 808 North Lake Shore Drive, when a man tried to snatch her purse.

According to the police report, the crime occurred in the vicinity of the 300 block of East Chicago Avenue.

Authorities said the would-be robber fled the scene westbound on Chicago Avenue.

The crook was described a male black, 28 to 35-years-old, 5'9" to 6-feet-tall, 145 to 180 pounds, with black hair and a dark complexion.

He was last seen wearing black shorts and a multi-colored, plaid shirt.
