On August 18, 2011, around 1 a.m., 911 callers reported a possible shooting near the Anthony Auto Group dealership at 7225 Grand Ave. in Gurnee, Illinois.
Witnesses didn't know it at the time, but they were actually reporting a brutal stabbing.
Police say 18-year-old Zervont A. Thomas stabbed 33-year-old Stefan A. Metel to death and injured a 17-year-old boy, while they were driving down the street.
According to the Tribune, Thomas asked Metel for a ride, then flew into a rage when Metel said he had to stop to pick up some money.
If you ask me, and I know you didn't, this sounds like a robbery, gone terribly wrong.
A more plausible explanation for the stabbings, is that Thomas became furious when he learned his victims didn't have any money.
Asking for a ride was probably Thomas' way of getting his victims alone.
Beside, Thomas has been arrested for robbery before.
Lake County, Illinois police records indicate Thomas was released from jail on August 15, 2011, on his own recognizance.
The teen had been arrested for robbery.
Three days after his release, Thomas is back in jail, this time for first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Thomas' bail has been set at 5 million dollars.
Question: Did the system fail to keep the Gurnee stabbing victims safe?
The system probably couldn't keep him, it seems like he only had a minor charge and served his time. He also may have been a minor when he committed the crime. Judging by the story, he would have killed someone when he was released, as he is nothing but a thug. Hopefully this time they will lock him up and throw away the key. It boggles my mind how people like this can just destroy lives and throw their own life over something so stupid. These people are the scum of our society and deserve to be treated as such. Condolences to the family of the victims. This just goes to show you, never pick anyone up asking for a ride, especially some thug on the street. The day of hitchhiking being safe for both parties died long ago.

ReplyDeleteWell things are never as simple as the previous comments. No doubt, these men should not have been stabbed. What is distrubing is you have a 33 year old hanging out with essentially two minor teenagers. The 17 year old's name should not be listed in the press, but perhaps there was some male prostituting? or drug-dealing? Stabbing someone over these two disagreements is ridiculous (even if the 33 year old was "playing games with the money", but stabbing someone over a disagreement on driving and stopping at home first is simply illogical. The writer of this story forces us to read between the lines.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments...my condolences to the family...just highlighting why a 33 year would hook up with a 17 and 18 year (whom he met in jail) during the middle of the day? Teen-agers need to be in school during the day and grown-ups have things to do like work. We must be careful in regards with whom we socialize. Whether white or black, whether plotting/killing classmates at schools or shooting others on the street shows definitely signs of the younger generation being de-sensitive to human life. Blame it on the movies, blame it on a more agressive society or blame it on the parents--white or black there seems to be no more decorum.
