| Is this police brutality? Excessive force? Or cops just doing their job? |
Washington D.C. -- Two officers, identified as Washington D.C. cops, were caught on camera slamming a wheelchair bound man to the ground.
The video entitled “DC police abuse homeless man in wheelchair”, was uploaded to Youtube on May 19, 2011, by someone using the screen name ChrisWhite313.
At the beginning of the footage, two cops can be seen wrestling with a man riding what appears to be a motorized wheelchair, and instructing him to “get on the ground”. Which is a little difficult to do if you can't walk.
Then the officers throw the seemingly disabled man onto the concrete, causing his head to bleed. A person at the scene said the alleged suspect's head was "bust wide open".
When a bystander asked one of the arresting officers why the man was being taken into custody, the cop said the injured man “assaulted a police officer”. Angry eyewitnesses openly disagreed with the officer’s version of what happened and told him that his reasons for arresting the man “weren’t true”.
A woman in the background can be heard saying the bleeding suspect lives on the block where the incident occurred.

A law officer that gets his pay from the very citizen that was thrown to the ground! This has got to stop!! I can't in good faith let my son become an officer of the law with such crimes by officers being committed. My heat hurts for this individual.

ReplyDeleteBesides throwing that man to the ground, the cops LIE about this. Their report is that he -- and old man in a wheelchair -- assaulted them. That would have been the official report, but thank goodness there was somebody there to record what really happened. Those cops should go to jail for PERJURY for lying on their report. And when it's the cop's word against yours, you will always lose. Cops are pathetic bullies who like to beat on people because of their own inadequacy. The did it at UMD this year, and they do it on a daily basis. Thugs.

Good for those witnesses for saying something and good for the guy who took the video. Assaulted a cop my ass. Just another way to cover their asses. I know someone here in Chicago who actually lost half of their finger when a door slammed shut on it when cops were trying to arrest them. Know what they did? They didn't retrieve the finger, cuffed him and than walked him down 4 flights of stairs bleeding all over the place. Than lied and charged him with resisting arrest. I would be resisting arrest too if half my finger was gone. Some of them shouldn't be cops. It's just their way of being a bully and boy are these two in a world of crap!

ReplyDeleteI'd like to see what happened before the video started rolling? Did the guy in the wheelchair have a gun, a knife, or a razor. The person who was recording must have observed that the guy in the wheelchair was not complying or he was threatening the police and that's why he started recording. Was he trying to run over the cops? Was he under arrest and refuse to comply with the officers orders? ASSAULT is defined differently in some places. In Illinois Assault means threatening violence. For your safety you have no right to resist arrest, whether you think its lawful or not. This is not a police state, its a country of rules and laws. I'd like to see what all you would have done with the same information the police had. They took the guy to the ground. How is this the worst police brutality you have ever seen? Nobody hit the guy they just took him to the ground. This is just a case of the sheep hating the sheepdog.

I say again, this is some of the worst police brutality I have EVER seen..period! Just why was it necessary to SLAM him to the CEMENT sidewalk? All they had to do was get him up and put the cuffs on him..PERIOD!
I realize that, in today's society, the cops have a rough job out there but THIS was totally uncalled for!

ReplyDeleteage and even disability. Two days ago I noted an 84 year old man brutalized by police (Alabama), nose broken, shoulder dislocated, etc.
Reason he called 911 to report an accident in front of his house.
Obvisouly the list is large - a check on YouTube for police brutality brings up 479,000 or so videos and counting.
However under the current political climate "We the people" are the enemy of the seceret state so it really comes as no surprise.

You don't know the whole story behind the situation so you are just going to jump to conclusions and think just because the part you saw on video looked bad. Until you know the whole story don't jump on and start criticizing cops. Another thing the media does is only give you part of the story and not the whole thing.
Your right, we don't know the whole story and never will because of the lies the police regularly tell and their vaunted "thin blue line". We can only go on what our own senses tell us. Your senses honestly tell you that what is shown on this video was handled in a respectful and proper manner by 2 public servants? 2 grown men throw a disabled person to the ground with that much force is the ONLY way they could handle it with all their high-dollar, taxpayer-funded training? ReplyDeleteWe don't know what happened before the camera started rolling. I'm not saying the cops' actions were justified, but there's usually a reason for things like this. Maybe he wasn't handicapped at all, and was identified as a wanted criminal. A man in a wheelchair is a brilliant disguise.

From the size of those officers I'd say it would have been easy work to force his hands behind his back and cuff him. At least that was what I was taught in my police training for simple non-compliance (and I know for a fact it works). You escalate as they escalate. Move up to arm bars, goose-necks, shoulder locks, etc. while forcing them to the ground.
If you look carefully they ground him hard and fast enough that his feet come off the ground for a 1/4 second. I'd applaud that if it were a 6 foot muscle bound gangbanger they were taking down - but this guys an obvious invalid.
Unfortunately, "police are cowards" in every corner of the world, here in Brazil is not so different, perhaps a little worse by poor pay ...

Were they ever charged with assault against a disabled man? Did the force match whatever feeble resistance this man attempted against them. Here you have the dead weight of 2 men falling on a man with no leg stregth to brace himself.

They could have arrested him or given him a citation without the excessive force. And they do this regardless of race....they are abusing their power. I don't trust cops.

This cat looked scared and they should have called proper authorities to capture the animal properly. Instead they shot him! Those cops were worthless. RIP beautiful mountain lion.
ReplyDeleteI am shocked to see this. I have always been impressed with our American way of human rights and how well we treat our minority groups. We often accuse other nations of police over use of their power and how their minority people are treated and abused. (e.g. Tibet). I guess I have been blind for too long until I see this. I pledge to our government to stop accusing other nations as how they treat their people. We are doing the same or even worse.
