So far, all we really know about the Chicago police officers who have been accused of playing strip poker with an intoxicated woman, then raping her in her North Side Rogers Park apartment, is that the officers are 10-year veterans of the police department. But more information is starting to leak.
A lot of speculation has been made about the officers’ race or ethnicity; and a lot of Chicagoans are outraged, because the cops have not been publicly identified.
According to information left in Chicago News Report’s comment section, both of the accused policemen are Hispanic and despite what we’ve heard in the mainstream media - the officers have not been formally charged with a crime.
“They aren't being splattered on the news because they have not been charged with a crime (yet). DNA evidence is pending. Responsible media outlets already know their names. Standard practice is to not connect suspects names with crimes until charges are filed. It prevents a little thing called "libel suits." BTW, our little soon-to-be-named CPD stud muffins are Hispanic.” |
If what I'm reading is true, that the woman is mentally challenged, was trashed and possibly high, these two cops need to be fired WITHOUT any hope for a pension! Some jail time would be a good thing for them as well!
ReplyDeleteApparently these creeps have done this before, but the victims were too scared/ashamed to pursue charges. CPD just suspended a third man who was possibly involved in an earlier incident. As one of the cops on SSC said, their job is to "serve and protect." This was not only a violation of an individual woman, but of the core values of good cops.
ReplyDeleteI want to know why their ethnicity matters...
ReplyDeleteIt matters because it's refreshing to read about a crime that wasn't committed by a black guy (or two or three).
ReplyDelete"Anonymous said: I want to know why their ethnicity matters"
ReplyDeleteIt matters, because it's part of the story. When this news broke, people all over the Internet assumed the officers were black.

ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with you. The race of the accused doesn't matter. A woman was allegedly raped, and the accused perpetrator's race doesn't lessen the pain and humiliation that comes with that crime. Their race doesn't change the accusation or the embarrassment they've brought on fellow officers.
These men — regardless of race -- violated a trust (of many) on so many levels.
Your desire to focus on race is no better of an excuse than the media outlets who reveal race gratuitously.
Revealing the race -- which is not pertinent-- only makes those who are concerned about their race are those looking for ethnic vindication.
And while I understand the pressure a minority group carries on its collective shoulders, that as a reason for believing the race is important is very different from the reality of whether race is relevant.
Anonymous, I said the offenders' race/ethnicity mattered, because it is part of the story, not because it changes the severity of what happened.
ReplyDeleteEither way. A woman said no and it was not heeded. Two cops from a different beat picked up someone and for whatever reason ... They were on the clock when they thought it would be a good idea to leave the street at 3am to play strip poker in a woman's apartment.

Not sure that it does, most violent crime is committed by Hispanics and blacks so one could have guessed it.
I suppose one of the problems might be the great lengths the media goes to to hide the race of suspects if they appear to be minorities and then buries the stories if the suspect is caught is in fact a minority.
I've even seen stories where the suspect was described as white and then turns out to be Hispanic caught and then the story is buried.
The fact that these guys are cops will probably over shadow their race in this case.
Tim: regarding: ....Anonymous, I said the offenders' race/ethnicity mattered, because it is part of the story, not because it changes the severity of what happened.
ReplyDeleteI saw what you wrote. Their race/ethnicity is irrelevant. It is not part or germane to the story. The fact they are cops is relevant.
That other anonymous comment about most violent crime being committed by HIspanics and blacks, while ignorant, proves my point of feeding into stereotypes.
Anonymous, any information that identifies a suspect in a crime, is germane to the story. As far as feeding stereotypes go, other people's personal beliefs and conclusions, are none of my business.
ReplyDeleteI'm not in the practice of telling other people what to think.
A suspect's race and gender is *NOT* a stereotype. Instead the problem lies with most other Chicago news media, when the suspect's race and gender is withheld.
ReplyDeletenot to make light of this insident by any means but protect and serve not pillage and rape eww these cops disgust me and if they wernt cops these men wld be charged and booked by now and the trial wld commence any day now its simply dispicable how the police in this country and many other countrys can get away with murder (drew petterson) and their fellow officers stand for it
