Man allegedly assaulted at Uptown bar

Photo: jason-king1
At 2:19 a.m., a man called police after he was ejected from a North Side Uptown bar.

A customer at the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, 4802 North Broadway Street, said he was forcibly removed from the bar and kicked by security.

Green Mill’s management also contacted authorities.

A representative of the bar admitted to removing the customer, and said the unhappy man was loitering in front of the business - refusing to leave.

It's unclear if an arrest was made.

Earlier this year, a female patron called police, claiming a bouncer at Green Mill struck her in the face.

  1. I know a few people who have had trouble with the Green Mill and their brute of a doorman, even on the sidewalk in FRONT of this club. Rather arrogant of the management to "ass-ume" they also have rights to the sidewalk. I've heard about this gorilla pushing a panhandler to the ground. Sad that this historic jazz club has to resort to having this type of employee. One of these days, they will be sued because of this guy. What a jerk!

  2. Towanda, from now on, I am going to keep my ears open for any calls coming from this bar.

  3. Towanda and Timothy - I urge you not to jump to conclusions. The incident reported happened at 2 in the morning. The bar staff also called police and admits to needing to remove a customer. Chances are pretty good that there was drinking involved - though enough FACTS are not yet available.

    Big Al, the person who is referred to above as a "gorilla" and a "jerk" is one of the kindest and most reasonable people I've encountered, as well as good at his job. He can appear to be gruff and intimidating - that's part of his job as well. If a drunk/disorderly person wants to start a fight and has to consider taking on Big Al, they might think twice. Al is a valuable asset to Uptown business owners such as myself, and cares about protecting the Green Mill as well as the area around it so that patrons feel safe coming in and leaving. It's no secret that the corner of Broadway and Lawrence attracts trouble - especially late at night when there are lots of drunk people about - both bar patrons as well as "panhandlers". To rely on things you've "heard about" is probably about as fair as 'ass-uming' they're true.

    I know Al has been a valuable employee for the Green Mill, and I would guess that's why he's been there for so many years. I, for one, feel better knowing he has our back on this street.

  4. Jennifer;
    I'm not "ass-uming" anything. My son, who has a balance issue from nearly losing his feet, and yes, a drinking problem, WAS pushed to the ground on the PUBLIC sidewalk by your pal, "big Al". That makes him a jerk and a gorila in my book. Pushing a handicap person to the ground, whether he was drunk or not, makes this "Al" person the very definition of a bully as well.

    I totally get the neighborhood over there, it's not pleasant because of the proximity to all the shelters and sro's, BUT putting your hands on a person who wasn't even a patron of the Green Mill, who was intoxicated and perhaps rowdy on a PUBLIC street is just wrong. I also KNOW of another person this AL shoved around outside of the MiLL on PUBLIC streets. CALL THE COPS instead of shoving people around. I'm sure he has a cell phone...CALL 911 and let the cops deal with it on a PUBLIC street. Inside the Mill, I get but outside, again, CALL THE COPS!

    I'm not "jumping to conclusions" by any stretch of the imagination.

  5. Jennifer, at which point did I jump to a conclusion? I simply told it like is was, from an unbiased point of view.
