San Francisco Police Shoot Man in Wheelchair After Alleged Stabbing

San Francisco, California --- January 4, 2011, around 10 a.m., a citizen with a cell phone camera captured a tense standoff between a man in a wheelchair and the San Francisco Police Department. The scene unfolded in the middle of the street by the Department of Mental Health Clinic, near the intersection of 10th and Howard streets in San Francisco, California.

In the beginning of the six-minutes-and-nineteen-seconds-long video, detectives in plain-clothes and a cop in full uniform, are seen surrounding a man in a wheelchair. Although the offender appears to be disabled, witnesses saw the man up and walking around, without assistance.

Police initially accosted the man, because he was reportedly vandalizing random cars by slashing their tires with a knife.

When the suspect allegedly stabs one of the officers, he ups the ante and the offender's decision almost cost him his life.

After pepper spray and rubber bullets failed, a uniformed officer fired several shots at the suspect, purportedly striking the knife-wielding perpetrator in the groin. According to several news sources, the offender's injuries were non-life-threatening.

The officer who was allegedly stabbed was not seriously hurt.

This incident has highlighted the SFPD's need for tasers.

  1. Ok, I watched that video and was it a bit of overkill..sure but that "handicapped" man had a knife and the cops didn't know what else he was hiding. It appeared to me that he threw the knife at the cops and they could have shot him dead BUT they just shot to wound. What a scam that guy was pulling off acting like he was handicap..mental maybe, but not physically handicapped. Takes all kinds I guess. Who called it in? Obviously a citizen saw him doing whatever to cars. That man needs some meds for sure!

  2. towanda, that video was hard to watch. I feared for the cops and I feared for the man in the wheelchair. Luckily, no one was killed.

ROFL... This could have been easily avoided if someone just kicked over his wheelchair.... How doltish this guy made the SFPD.
