On October 19, 2010, 19-year-old Corey Jackson, a sophomore at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, reportedly hung himself on his college campus. Jackson’s body was found in a wooded area of the university.
Although this story was reported days ago, I still felt the need to weigh in on this topic. I really felt like a lot of people were missing the point.
Police claim there was no evidence of bullying at Jackson’s school; and that may be true. But bullying isn’t the only way to torment someone. Sure, there aren't any laws against it, but being rejected can be just as devastating as being picked on.
Before Jackson’s death, he made a heartfelt confession to his aunt, Kim Jones. "He said 'I don't know what's wrong. Ever since I came out people are treating me different. I don't know what to do. I don't know where I belong," Jones told a local Detroit news station.
I believe rejection, not bullying, pushed the Oakland University student over the edge.
