Lawrence House: Jason Gurneau: Man arrested for Uptown robbery, rape was 'a good tenant'

It's hard to believe that a man whose favorite quote is "don't worry, be happy," has been declared a danger to the community, but according to a authorities, that's exactly what Jason Gurneau is.

On Sunday, December 9, 2012, around 1:40 a.m., 32-year-old Jason Gurneau robbed, beat, and savagely raped a woman on the 4400 block of North Sheridan Road in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, said police.

According to an account published by the Chicago Tribune, during the assault, Gurneau shoved his fingers down the woman's throat, choked her, hit her in the face, and ripped her underwear off.

The 32-year-old so-called homeless, gang banger reportedly told officials he "should have finished the bitch off."

Following up on a tip, Chicago News Report contacted Lawrence House at 1200 West Lawrence Avenue, because it was one of Gurneau's last known addresses.

Citing one source, Gurneau was a "good tenant and always paid his rent on time."

The apparently troubled man lived at Lawrence House for about a year, but he lost his apartment during one of his many incarcerations.

"He (Gurneau) used to stand at the front desk and talk to us all the time," said a Lawrence House employee. "The last time I saw him, he told me he was expected a phone call. I can't believe  he did that to that woman!"

Several people around Lawrence House recognized Gurneau by name... all of them described him as a "nice person."

According to Gurneau's Facebook page, his favorite quote is "don't worry, be happy" and he likes jazz music and comedy shows.

  1. "A Chicago man appeared in court today after he allegedly jumped out of a bathroom stall at a Wrigleyville bar and stabbed a man in the neck early Sunday morning, police said.

Gregg A. Greaves, 23, of the 4700 block of North Beacon Street, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, police said.

Judge Edward Harmening ordered Greaves held in lieu of $500,000 bail during a Monday hearing.

At 12:26 a.m. Sunday, officers were called to the Red Ivy sports bar at 3525 N. Clark St., where the 25-year-old suburban victim told officers Greaves jumped out of a bathroom stall and attacked him with a broken beer bottle, slicing him on both sides of the throat, according to a police report.

The victim also suffered cuts on his chin, hands and neck while pushing the assailant away. At some point, another man entered the bathroom and helped hold the attacker until police got there, the report stated.

The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was treated and released, the report said.

Greaves refused to wear his pants and yelled obscenities while being processed at a police station. Also, while being processed, the man defecated into his hands and threw the matter onto the floor of the station, the report stated."

  2. Hey, welcome back CNR. You've been missed.

  3. For the record, new management guidelines would not have allowed this man to rent at Lawrence House. Per the management, he did request to move to Lawrence House but was refused.

  4. Cappleman, regardless of their new policies, Gurneau is a former tenant of Lawrence House. According to our sources, he lived there about a year ago. We can only wonder how many future-Gurneaus are living there now.

  5. Work to require the past building manager to more properly screen their tenants were met with resistance. I attended court hearings and asked the judge to put this building into receivership. When that occurred, I met with the new court-appointed building manager and made sure that people who were breaking the law were getting evicted out of this building. I also required the building to provide outdoor security guards at least 8 hours a day, 7 days a week.

There are a few others who are still in eviction court but they should be out soon. If you speak with the area residents and the people who live in Lawrence House, you will hear there's been a huge change since new management has started in this building.

  6. Cappleman, that's fantastic... definitely a step in the right direction. However, in order for that to work, the lawbreakers have to get caught, first. By the time their dirty little deeds are discovered, who knows how many people have been victimized?

The bottom line is this: There are too many places like Lawrence House in Uptown. Flop-houses, SROs, section-8, and CHA housing sites have completely destroyed that area.

  7. What works is standards for good screening, good management, and good security. Buildings comply with these standards or face consequences.

My focus is not on buildings that house people with low incomes, or middle incomes, or high incomes. My focus is on ensuring the safety of the residents who live in any building where there are higher rates of criminal activity. My experience has been that most people of any income appreciate the right to live in a building that's safe for them and their families. Those people who do not share in this value are learning that their behavior is not going to be tolerated.

You're doing a good job James, but there needs to be an inquiry as to these so-called "professionals" who are licensed and get to bill the state and the federal government to do irresponsible things like fill that joint full of toxic, predatory losers in the first place. Thresholds, C4, and other agencies had no problem moving drug addicts in with people of low intelligence, and those people became victims of this toxic Chicago druggie loser culture.
You can talk to any of them until you're blue in the face, they just don't see anything wrong with what they're doing. Psychiatry is more or less a fraud, it exists in its current state soley to force very particular, hardcore liberal values upon people who are suffering from a mental illness, no solutions to their problems are really brought forth, they are just warehoused and set up in abject poverty, while bored fat girls straight from earning their Master's come out and listen to them tell the same sad stories about the weak preying on the weaker.
The whole system needs a complete overhaul.

  9. It will never end until the thought of returning to the clink - again - is made much less desirable for these career criminals. They obviously can't be rehabilitated. I sincerely believe they miss their buddies.

That being said, I applaud the efforts but I just don't go to Uptown for any reason and can't believe that I once used to walk to establishments there with the belief that Uptown was simply Chicago's version of "diversity".

  10. Uptown still exists?

I havent set foot in the neighborhood since the "youth" were rioting in the streets.

  11. The alderman only speaks up in the very rare case that the perp is a white guy, ignoring the hundreds of crimes committed by blacks.

  12. It's blasphemy to criticize blacks in this political climate, they can only be praised and made excuses for.
More than once I've been told by a shining example of the black community when I bust them doing what they do "We president now, you rayciss", which I guess means they can do whatever they want because a HALF black guy is president.
I predict there will be a movement that Obama stay President for life, or else they'll riot. Then I'm moving overseas.

  13. The "perp" is Native American from the Chippewa tribe. Not that it means anything--except that you can't always ID a person's race by eyeball.

  14. O.K., well, those facial slashes are akin to the teardrop tattoos. No, it doesn't mean anything. But you can ID "them" by their appearance. The sh*tty $hitcago expression (pouty mouth, woe is me) on his face says stay clear as well. "White" men wear this on their face in Uptown and Edgewater too..... sans the slashes.

    Sad.

  15. (P.S. How'd he get the French surname? Via Detroit or Montreal? It certainly wasn't from Bridgeport).

  16. Two other of their "good tenants", James and Wanda, sold drugs everyday, wanda from her wheelchair.
James liked to ride around on a pink bike yelling "Payback!!! Payback!!"
Wanda died from cancer awhile back, but James has a new Wanda now.

  17. the defendant isn't "white," but officially a member of the Chippewa tribe. He may have some European ancestry, but is a straight-up Res boy. No slur against Native Americans-other members of his family are good people.

    1. You are quite wrong actually. Many of his family members are alcoholics, drug addicts and/or thieves.
