Wrigleyville: Masked motorist runs bicyclist off the road, chases him on foot

A masked driver tried to intentionally run a bicyclist over and when he missed, the driver jumped out of his vehicle and chased the biker on foot, said police.

The bizarre incident happened around 3:49 a.m. in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood on the city's North Side.

A man wearing a ski mask and driving a dark-colored car, possibly blue or black, tried to run the bicyclist over… then the driver exited his vehicle and chased the biker with a tire iron, said police.

A responding officer said he wasn’t sure if the incident was an attempted robbery or related to some other potential crime.

The offender, whose race is “unknown”, was last seen driving eastbound on West Grace Street from North Sheffield Avenue.

If you witnessed this incident, please contact the police.

  1. What. The. HELL?!?!

Talk about an unusual crime. Normally, something like this, given the time of day & strange nature of the crime, would seem to be targeted (perhaps retaliation against a drug dealer), though if the victim went to the police about it, that's probably not the case. Though that doesn't mean it wasn't targeted, could be a lover's quarrel, financial dispute, etc.

Or could be someone is just stone cold crazy.

  2. Very strange. My best guess is the cyclist and driver had a collision/incident on the road prior to this, and thats why the driver tried to run him over. Especially if he is mad enough to chase after the cyclist on foot. The biker probably smashed the driver's mirror off or something.

But, if it was vehicle damage he was concerned with, it seems like he shouldn't just leave the car on the side of the road while he chases somebody...

Your best guess is wrong. I know who this happened to and it had nothing to with scenarios you envision in your own personal bias against cyclists.

Chicago has had numerous ultra-violent muggings for the past few years that amount to summers of terror. Multiple men beating people unconscious with bats. That poor girl who was beaten nearly to death in Wicker Park.

Someone hit intentionally with a car and chased with a tire iron? Sounds like a new style of Chicago muggings.

Glad to see you all are paying attention to crime patterns in the city.

  5. To yesterday at 905 am - Did the person this happened to give you any indication as to why it may have happened, or is this just random violence?

And as a side note, while you can ride your bike any time of day or night, what was your friend doing riding a bike at 345 am? I would be worried about getting hit by a drunk, and/or someone who couldn't see me in the dark, than this happening. But still, riding a bike in the dead of night seems less than adviseable.
