Friday, at 9:49 p.m., a shooting was reported at 6354 North Oakley Avenue, near Oakley and Devon.
According to online business records, the address belongs to a store called Oakley Express.
Citing preliminary police dispatch reports, 7 to 8 male blacks were seen running away from the crime scene.
If more information becomes available, this article will be updated accordingly.
UPDATE: Late Friday night, about two hours after the shooting, police received information that someone was planning to retaliate.
Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 12:11 a.m., once again, gunfire exploded in West Rogers Park.
Shots were heard near the original crime scene at Devon and Oakley, the 2300 block of West Arthur, and the 6400 block of North Oakley.
Shortly after the shootings, witnesses saw three male Hispanics in a black Honda with the headlights turned off, fleeing westbound on Arthur, said police.
As of 12:23 a.m., there were no reports of injuries or property damage.
UPDATE: Saturday, at 12:48 a.m., police confirmed that the Friday, 9:49 p.m. victim victim, died.
UPDATE: It appears the shooting victim has ties to the Latin Kings street gang.
So according to Wikipedia and a Chicago native I met when first moving here......Rogers Park is the most "diverse" place in the U.S.A.

There are Latin Kings from Rosemont & Claremont a block away from Devon & Oakley so they are probably the ones who got shot & are looking to retaliate.

ReplyDeleteWe came out and saw so many cops cars and people around the scene. I was surprise to see lot of African and Latin people around the scene. All of them looked affiliated to gang.
I have lived in this area for 9 years and never seen so much crime in this neighborhood. Since African american moved from projects. Rogers park and west roger park has not been the same community due to increase in crime.Police need to surveillance these blocks and neighbor hood more frequently and install police cameras on the blocks. Drugs, prostitution,robbery, gangs and auto related crimes are increasing day by day.
It is just sad to know the person who died must be someone son, brother, cousin, father, etc and who ever will have to answer god one day. I hope the suspect gets arrested soon.

I've lived here 6 yrs and its time to move on. The city only acts when something like this happens and are not proactive. We have drug deals going down in broad daylight. Tell them of the failure of subsidised housing, how the people were supposed to assimilate into the rea but instead they turned it into the area they left. Tell them u want the HUD budget cut so that there is only enough for seniors,vets and people with mental and physical disabilities. This will force the CHA to reduce the number of vouchers and sell their buildings to private companies. The baby mamas who are the beneficiaries of subsidised housing have criminal relatives and boyfriends that target the area and they also live with them.

ReplyDeleteOn a racial note...that neighborhood is seeing a lot of black families moving into the apartments on Oakley, Claremont, Bell, etc. Hispanic families already live there, along with Assyrians, Arabs, Pakistanis, Indians. It is a mix of people that doesn't mix well.
ReplyDeleteThere are cops seen on Devon but unfortunately not enough is being done to crack down on these gangs....we all know the history of gangs in Chicago and how they work...how come the cops haven't figured out how to crack down on them already? A neighborhood where schools are only blocks away and where kids like to hang out, this kind of violence is intolerable. It seems that the city is quick to give people parking tickets and minor violation fees, while the major threats are being ignored. These gang bangers really need to quit. We don't need deaths and escalated crime in an economy that's already suffering.
ReplyDeleteWest Ridge is Devon Ave to the south. West Rogers Park is Devon Ave to the north. I will say on either side , once you get west of Hoyne or Damen, it starts to get very dicey! Hate to race bait, but crime has definitely went up over there ever since Cabrini Green was torn down. Very diverse indeed, but not a good mix of ppl. Most white ppl, Asians and European immigrants in that area reside much closer to Ridge ave or Peterson ave where it's much more peaceful and low volume.

My boyfriend is from off of Oakley and Devon and I never thought that someone would be shot over there, it seemed like a very middle eastern filled area, not really gang banging.
