CTA Red Line train catches on fire at Rogers Park station

Tuesday, March 13, 2012, around 11:44 p.m., a CTA train caught on fire at a North Side “L” station, said police.

Initial police dispatch reports indicated the fire was at the Howard Red Line stop.

However, subsequent police communications confirmed a southbound, Red Line train was stalled at the Loyola station at 1200 West Loyola Avenue in Rogers Park.

An officer at the scene said, according to CTA, the train malfunctioned, causing an electrical fire to erupt underneath one of the cars.

Traffic in the vicinity of the fire was temporarily blocked as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

The fire was put out around 12:07 a.m. Wednesday.

  7. Speaking of the CTA, is it just me or have the red line trains gotten beyond bad this past year (not that they were ever nice)? Recently I rode on a train at night that had (aside from the usual food scraps all over the place) a pillow, a desk lamp and a toaster (???) on the floor. The only thing that beats that was seeing someone smoking crack on the train.
