A confrontation between Chicago police officers and several male subjects was caught on tape. The person who recorded the incident claims he documented a clear case of police brutality.
On Sunday, January 1, 2012, around 2 a.m. New Year’s Day, officers assigned to the downtown Chicago Police Bicycle Patrol Unit responded to an alleged disturbance near East Randolph Street and North Wabash Avenue in the Loop.
Here’s YouTube user DowntownView’s account of what happened:
It happened near the Subway restaurant. Several men in cars were causing a disturbance; so, bike patrol approached.
When the men got out of their vehicles, the officers starting grabbing them.
I guess the male suspects thought the officers’ actions were unwarranted - so they started to complain.
The officers took offense to the suspects’ line of questioning and that’s when the police brutality began.
Because of the cameraman’s constant movement, most of the alleged action wasn’t caught on camera.
However, the shaky-handed videographer did manage to capture one slightly intense moment.
Around the 1 minute and 47 seconds mark in the video, an officer wearing a black and yellow jacket and a bike helmet is seen slamming a male suspect against the hood of a car.
It appears the man’s face was jammed into the hood of the vehicle.
Upon impact, the suspect screams and says, “He f*ck my face up!”
Then, someone, presumably the arresting officer, says, “You were already ugly.”
Well "God don't like ugly". He many not have been necessarily referring to any physical features. Just sayin'......
ReplyDeleteNot enough info to go on. The guys were "causing a disturbance"? What kind of disturbance? Bothering other people? Can't draw any conclusions from what we have here.
ReplyDeleteThis camera man sucks, as does his camera. And, I wish he would shut up. No one wants to hear his editorial.
ReplyDeleteWell, these people were apparently causing enough of a disturbance that store owners and/or other citizens in the area felt threatened, and called for the police.
ReplyDeleteWhat the alleged perps should have done is, speak with the police, then agree to leave the scene if it is apparent that they were harassing/threatening/whatever. You have a right to congregate, but do NOT have a right to threaten, intimidate, or otherwise harass fellow citizens. However, these jerks felt it was proper to instead be confrontational with the police, call them names, insult them, and threaten to get physical.
Guess what? That type of behavior will get your face slammed into a car hood by a cop. I hope people don't start with the, "Hey how would you like that?" crap. Guess what? I don't put myself into situations that result in business owners feeling threatened by me & calling the cops on me, much less into situations where I'm aggressive & confrontational with the police.
It's time for people to grow up and act like adults, because when you do that, you don't end up getting slammed into a hood by a cop.
These animals are ruining the downtown area. Where ever they go they bring their ghetto ways. And of course people are afraid, when you hear blackS starting to get loud next thing you know they will start shooting each other and stray bullets can kill the innocent. Stay on the southside animals. At least allow the downtown tourist area to be free and safe of these animals.
ReplyDeleteThe ebonics-talking cameraman was using my stolen iphone.
ReplyDeleteA clear instance of police brutality. It doesn't matter what the guy was alleged to have done. The video shows the guy detained, surrounded by cops, totally at their mercy. At that point you arrest the guy or you let him go. In both cases, efficiently, respectfully, and without violence.
ReplyDeleteThe police aren't allowed to exact their own demented definition of "justice" on the streets. The police are not allowed to gangstomp suspects.
And to "Big Al": regular adults get beat & tasered by the cops all the time without provocation: read last Sunday's front page Tribune article.
maybe they were parked behind the jeweler who leaves the mallers building with his loot? Just sayin....
ReplyDeletePolice brutality? What!? Is that a joke? Kudosto the CPD for everything that they do. I can't imagine having to deal with these sub-human thugs on a daily basis. We need more of these brave cops on the beats stat.
ReplyDeleteto Mike - the vast majority of police on citizen violence is provocated. It's very random that on duty police assault innocent civilians without reason - and that includes instances like this when the guy is screaming and trying to wrestle with two policemen. Did you even watch the video?
ReplyDeleteHere's a thought - comply with the police when they ask you to leave, and don't escalate things to this level, and you won't get thrown down. Pretty damn simple.
Would you rather they shot the guy??
Maybe it's just me but it sounds like a South or West Side ghetto....
ReplyDeleteSeriously, do you hear those chimp outs? Someone was having a Category 4 Chimpout. I mean when it sounds like you're at a Zoo in the monkey section with them wildin out or whatever they call it they are up to no good.
Fact is now downtown you don't want to be.
How do you know this was filmed on a stolen iPhone?
ReplyDeleteThe user didn't turn it sideways to capture video in the natural widescreen format. Someone who owned the phone legitimately would know these sorts of details. They would research and learn about the phone prior to purchasing it. Also, it would of came with an instruction manual...
WHAT FINNA BE UP YALL THIS IS LAMEIKA AGAIN. I FINNA SAY THAT I BE SO GLAD THIS SITE BE FILTERING THE N WORD CUZ YOU WHITE CRACKERS LOVE TO USE THAT WORD TO DESCRIBE ALL BLACKS. LET ME TELL YALL SOMETHING I BE A GOOD CITIZIN AND BE LIVING IN THE GOLD COAST. I FINNA BE GIVING MONEY TO HAITI, UGANDA, AND AFRICAN AMERICAN CHARITIES. I BE A GOOD PERSON CUZ I BE WINNING THE LOTTERY. AND YALL PEOPLE BE LOOKING AT ME LIKE I BE SOME ANIMAL WHEN I GO TO THE FANCY DEPARTMENT STORES. AND YALL BE TRIPPIN WHEN I PAY AND SPEND THOUSANDS. I BE BUYING ME SOME GUCCI
ReplyDeleteYou could pump infinite money into Haiti, they would still squander it and it would be a desolate craphole.
ReplyDeleteFar too often “police brutality” is just a term used by agitators and clueless armchair experts to describe any arrests they don’t like.

No. The only thing that is clear is that you have an axe to grind.
Where is the alleged “brutality” in this video?
mike January 3, 2012 11:58 AM said... “It doesn't matter what the guy was alleged to have done.”
Actually, it does. If he is resisting arrest, which he appears to be, then the requisite amount of force will be used to bring him under control. That might make you uncomfortable because you are squeamish, sheltered, arrogant and ignorant, or maybe you just have an agenda.
mike January 3, 2012 11:58 AM said... “The video shows the guy detained, surrounded by cops, totally at their mercy. “
And yet, he continues to resist. And then you both wonder why force will continue to be used. Either you are totally ignorant or you’re just being disingenuous.

When you are being detained or arrested, the smartest move is to comply with the officer’s instructions - efficiently, respectfully, and without violence. You will get your day in court. Fighting and making a dramatic scene in the hopes of winning the Ghetto Lottery is not the best move.

I must have missed it. Where exactly is the “gangstomping” in this video? You must have been watching some other clip.

Perhaps they do, on occasion. “All the time without provocation” is exaggeration. These “chicken little” false claims diminish the credibility of future allegations that might actually be legitimate.
"Exaggeration" got flagged? I'll try to watch my language in the future. LOL

ReplyDeleteLots of people that own Iphones don't know to turn them to landscape to film something.
You see this all the time.
The phone doesn't have to be stolen.
@ Castellan Get a life! You seem to have too much time in your hands.
ReplyDeleteI know, I used the word assimilate and got temporarily banned, had to reset my ISP addr. (LOL - they said the word filter is being tweaked)
ReplyDeleteTo Castellan - you are exactly on point.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that people tend to forget, like "Mike" here or some posters on the article last week with two police trying to subdue a man on the ground, is that this isn't simply a wrestling match. If the cop is just going for a pin or some points from a ref, I'm sure most of the time they can take these thugs on one-on-one. But that's not the case.
In an arrest the police are attempting to get the criminal's hands behind his back so he can be cuffed, and I'm sure that the criminal fighting back like these guys makes it much more difficult.
They need to get both of his hands behind his back, and hold them there long enough to get the cuffs on. So when the guy is fighting, you need at least one cop arm to hold back each criminal arm, and you also need to somehow get one set of cuffs that are separated by probably six inches of chains, around both of his wrists.
Frankly, it seems like a job that will take at LEAST two, if not more, police to do.
And yeah, if the perp if fighting back, the cops absolutely have the right to use force on him to subdue him. What if they let him go & he pulls out a gun, or grabs one of theirs?!?!
