Wednesday, police were called to the same hotel where a night clerk reportedly struck an elderly resident with a baseball bat.
At 4:55 p.m., authorities responded to a 911 call from the Marshall Hotel at 1232 North La Salle Drive, on Chicago's Near North Side.
According to police dispatch, a man was found unresponsive in a 1st floor restroom.
Police and medical workers were on the scene within minutes of receiving the emergency call.
At the time of this report, the patient's identity, as well as his condition, were unknown.
On January 12, 2012, 54-year-old Marshall Hotel employee, Robert Richardson, was accused of hitting a 91-year-old man with a Louisville slugger, after the two men got into an alleged confrontation.

These SRO'S need to be monitored better by the city. While I'm sure they are necessary for some people, the majority of residents are drug users, drunks, dealers, felons, prostitutes and pimps. This one also houses Threshold people, some of which use and abuse the system and the help Thresholds offer. Can't get a Sec 8 voucher? Pretend you are not only mentally challenged but are dual addicted and Thresholds will set you up in one of these lovely SRO'S and then Shelter Care Plus will pay most of your rent while you blow your disability check on drugs and booze.
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't this a great neighborhood to be living in for practically nothing? Wow! We can't even afford to live in Old Town. What's wrong with this picture???

ReplyDeleteIsn't this the NEW American dream?
LMAO!
ReplyDeleteI am a client of one of the many agencies in Chicago and I have many arguments with my workers over this very subject matter.
ReplyDeleteMy contention is far fewer people than they serve actually need the help and want to get better, they disagree and say all their clients are deserving of the help they get.
You can post and read these stories, but you'd have to stay in one of them for awhile to truly understand the filth and the misery these guys create for themselves. Hopeless would be a step up from the way it makes you feel. Never again!!
ReplyDeleteTo Fed Up - I think what you mentioned yesterday at 549, that the people being "served" by these agencies really don't need help to survive or want to get better, is spot on.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I believe that something like this is at the heart of so many debates when it comes to welfare & social service organizations: The bleeding hearts who advocate for these things (like the SRO's, or places like the Center on Halsted), don't or can't believe that some of the people they are "helping" are really just using them to help scam the system.
You, as a (former) insider, know the real story with a lot of these residents, and probably have better ideas for how to keep social services alive for those who truly do need that kind of help, while kicking off the rolls those who simply prefer to scam the system instead of working for a living like the rest of us.
But unfortunately, and especially in Chicago, those who scream the loudest usually win. And those who scream the loudest are always the ones with little or nothing to lose, so why not scream? And those screamers are also the ones savvy enough to convince the bleeding hearts to champion the cause for them.
