Chicago violin shop sues anonymous online critic for 50k

Cue the sad violins...

Chunyee Lu, the owner of Guadagnini Violin at 407 South Dearborn Street, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against an anonymous online critic using the monikers TRUTHETELLER1790, TRUTH TELLER, and TRUTH T.

The messages were posted from the same IP address, said Lu's lawyer, James Branit.

The online critic allegedly bashed Lu's shop on yelp.com, citysearch.com, kudzu.com, and merchantcircle.com, reports the Sun-Times.

As of Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 7:40 p.m., kudzu.com is the only named website that still has an unflattering review of Lu's store.

"Please don't go to this shop unless you want to be sold something which isn't what its purported to be for an outrageous price. They also will try to convince you your instrument needs a super expensive repair when it just needs an adjustment. Ripoff," said someone using the screen name TRUTHETELLER1790.

The violin shop owner wants $50,000 in damages.

  6. For God's sake. It's one thing to look at the south side and west side ghetto violence and paint all black people with a broad brush, but denying the greatness of Michael Jackson's music? That's not just racist, it's stupid racist.

None of which has anything to do with the senseless violins in Printer's Row, which is what this article is about.

  9. Good luck with this suit, Branit.

Sites like Kudzu that allow people to post reviews make it clear that the review is one person's OPINION, and are not cold hard facts.

If the person was going around posting messages saying, "I purchased an instrument there that the owner guaranteed was a Stradivari original, but turned out was a fake," then there is potential lible. But again, that's a grey area, becuase the person could be stating an opinion.

The best this owner can hope for is an injunction to prevent that person from posting these sorts of "opinions."

  10. Michael Jackson was not a "musician". What instrument did he play other then skin flute? He was lucky enough to be connected to, and pay, some of the most talented music PRODUCERS on earth like Madonna, et al. Neither are singers either. They sing, but they're not singers, nor vocalists. Opening their mouths just came along with the territory of shaking their $$ maker on a stage. Not that they weren't talented at that, but.......keep it real.

  11. To today at 11 am - you are right, people like MJ & Madonna, or nowadays Brittney Spears, aren't musicians - they're performers.

Taylor Swift? I'm no fan, but she is a musician, she writes a lot of her songs and music, and plays instruments.

The Grateful Dead were (and surviving members are) musicians - they composed their own scores, wrote their own lyrics, and every show they performed the music and every show was different.

I'm not taking away from what MJ, or Madonna, or Brittney do, they obviously have a market that gobbles that stuff up. But yeah, they are by no means musicians.
