VIDEO: Mayor Rahm Emanuel leads anti-violence march through Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and 31st Ward Alderman Ray Suarez led an annual anti-violence march through Chicago’s Northwest Side Hermosa neighborhood Tuesday.

The September 27, 2011, annual non-violence demonstration started around 5:30 p.m. at Hermosa Park, 2240 North Kilbourn Avenue.

As the participants marched an estimated six block north on Kilbourn Avenue to Kelvyn Park, 4438 West Wrightwood Avenue, they shouted positive messages like, “Up with hope! Down with dope!”.

While a neighborhood youngster was capturing the moment on video, a female demonstrator stopped to show off her sign and its straightforward message: “No More Tolerance For Gangs Drugs & Violence in the 31st Ward”.

  1. These marches are so stupid and useless. Ghettos will never change no matter how many marches you have. Mr. Mayor you want to reduce crime...GIVE US MORE POLICE WALKING THE BEAT! And what about the north side where these animals commute to commit their crime. Do we not get any help? Once again the Mayor panders to the low life ghetto.

  2. I applaud these residents and the mayor for putting on their "marching shoes" BUT, people can't march 24/7, positive loitering lasts an hour or two. What is needed is more police, better parenting and holding parents of these thugs accountable, enforcing laws, like the curfew and requiring people who get freebies to volunteer a few hours a month for those freebies. Imagine what requiring them to volunteer would accomplish. Picking up trash in their hoods. Weeding out the vacant lots in their hoods thus eliminating coverage for these ghetto thugs, volunteering at their children's schools, standing on corners to protect children when school gets out and on & on. The word "freebie" should be eliminated from the english language. DO SOMETHING TO GET IT. Give back to your community. What a bunch of lazy ass people! Hell, they blew a casket when they might have to pee in a cup to qualify for free or cheap rent. IF you are not guilty, what is their to worry about..hmmmm

  5. Hey Anonymous 10:35 -- this area is not ghetto; it has crime that needs attention but it's not an unchangeable ghetto. We live in the largest beat with the fewest cops, residents actually doing something is better than just commenting on a blog with nothing to contribute.

  6. Alderman's name is wrong on the article. Thank you for this, Alderman Ray Suarez.

  7. Hey Anonymous 10:58, stop living in a pretend world. If you are in an area that is so bad that you need to have marches, you probably are living in a ghetto. Hell, I live in Rogers Park which is ghetto. Sure we have white and some yuppies and compared to West side not full blown ghetto, but still ghetto. Whatever Anonymous 10:58, if it makes you feel better to think your area is not "ghetto" go ahead.

  8. Marches and rallies aren't going to do crap, we need to revoke citizenship and deport any and all gang members.
