Police and firefighters were called to a 28 story condo building in Lakeview, around 12:21 a.m.
According to police dispatch, a fire was reported at 3600 North Lake Shore Drive.
Although the exact location of the blaze isn't clear, the entire lobby was filled with smoke, said an officer at the scene.
Extra police cars were called to block traffic at Lake Shore Drive and Addison, and Lake Shore Drive and Grace.
CTA was notified at 12:29 a.m. that buses traveling along inner Lake Shore Drive near the fire, would have to be rerouted.
At 1:21 a.m., an officer at the scene said there were no displacements or injuries, that she was aware of.
Officers working crowd control, called for addition units at 1:56 a.m.
One source said the residents were gathered outside the condo and trying to go back inside.
At the time, fire officials were still trying to determine if the building was safe for reentry.
Residents were allowed back in the building around 2:14 a.m.; blocked intersections were reopened around the same time.
The fire reportedly started in a storage unit. However, the cause of the fire was not disclosed.

We live in this building. We were asleep and heard nothing. Weird.
ReplyDeleteI heard the helicopter, fire engines all night long. Irritating, but if I lived in one of those highrises, I'd be comforted knowing there's real protection in those matters. Good job Chicago Fire Dept.
ReplyDeleteNow if we could get our tax $$ to take care of the criminals allowed to roam the streets freely, unchecked.......
I live in this building not once did any fire alarms go off on the floors; residents on the higher level floors were not given an option to leave the building for their own safety. Management needs to address this issue. Whenever there is a fire and a lobby filled with smoke, there should be some type of notice to the residents. This is the second fire in this bldg in a year where no fire alarms went off, I believe that is a bldg code violation, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteWhen was the first fire?
ReplyDeleteI am on the 24th floor and I heard the alarms. Perhaps it depended upon which tower you were in. But I agree there needs to be a better procedure to notify all the residents.
ReplyDeleteI live in the north tower on the an upper floor ..the alarms were super loud to the point, i could barely hear anything ..plus the fire marsahal made an annocement over the intercom system for the residents to go back in their rooms ..really think about it , this building is constructed of concrete and steal ..it was designed to keep fires contained in one area ..it was also more of a danger for residents to get exposed to smoke inhalation excreta...what issue does management need to address the alarm was loud enough it could of woke up the dead
