Man stabbed in Lakeview, 1 suspect caught by bar’s security

At approximately 3:24 a.m., a store clerk at a Lakeview neighborhood 7-Eleven, 3407 North Halsted Street, called police.

The clerk said a "white man" was bleeding and asking for help in the store's parking lot.

The 7-Eleven employee also said two black male offenders were running southbound on Halsted Street.

Seconds later, police announced that a man had been stabbed at 3407 North Halsted Street.

Despite the fact that the clerk said the suspects ran southbound on Halsted, one of the alleged offenders was apprehended by security at a gay bar, north of the stabbing.

According to police dispatch, security guards at Hydrate, 3458 North Halsted Street, were holding a male black suspect for police.

The stabbing victim was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, 836 West Wellington Avenue, for medical treatment.

One source said the victim received a superficial stab wound to the chest.

Police did not say if the victim was stabbed during a robbery or an attempted robbery.

No further details are available.

  1. I knew it! I knew it! I knew it was a matter of time before something like this happened! Ugh! I am so damn mad I could burst! Is our alderman paying attention to any of the crimes in Lake View?!

  2. That neighborhood is getting worse by the second.

  3. Tom Tunney...wake the hell up!!!!! You might have won this election since no one ran against you, but that doesnt mean you sit on your lazy butt and do nothing. The police need to start the late night bike ride patrols back up and get out of their luxurious new offices.

  5. It's just "transient youth".

  6. ....and time to shut those bars down at 2:00am. It's obvious people just can't control themselves here anymore.

  7. i live and work in the bars and the neighbohood, its increasingly getting worse. This stuff has to end there will be no justice til someone is killed, then it will be just to late Mr Tunney, how do you sleep at night.

  8. Close down The Center on Halsted.

  9. Center on Halsted. Didnt end up very good. Just a day care center for the abandoned south side youths. SO sad. There was so much hope for that place. Took years to build. Ended up bringing even more crime to the neighborhood.
    So sad.

  10. Thanks anonymous at 11:11. I'm glad to hear someone that works at one of the bars acknowledges there's an increasing crime problem. I've seen the dramatic changes around here in the past year alone.

There's alot of finger pointing at this Tunney. I'm not accostomed to the Chicago alderman organization and I realize the bars/estalishments in the area have a vested interest to keep it all "hush-hush" but they, along with this Tunney, have a responsibility to a) admit there's a problem b) not literally cross their arms and turn their head when someone inquires about it and c) get involved in DOING something about it rather than just keep raking in $$. I have absolutely no respect for those that I (and Towanda) describe as wearing "rose-colored glasses".

I've witnessed the bloodshed out on Halsted Street.

  12. The victim underwent surgery and is in the ICU. He is expected to recover. His boyfriend pursued the attacker to Hydrate, where security's help was solicited.

  13. I work On north Halsted and I have to say i sometimes get a little worried about the crap that is going on. I agree that the Center on Halsted seems to have really brought in the bad youth. Once that went up there have been more problems than anything at that place. Closing the bars at 2am is not the problem, you will always have that problem. It's the element that is hanging around it.

  14. It's all those kids that hangout at the Center on Halsted what are they doing? They bring them in for what? So they can stick around and cause trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Center on Halsted? It'a a very expensive babysitter that bring in youth for funding, and then leave's them around for us to deal with.

  16. I'm not Sherlock, but I think I've figured out a pattern in all the violent crimes lately!

Every single one has been committed by "youths". When these "youth" are caught, their mothers point out that they're actually really good kids. They're working on finishing their GED.

If I see a roving band of "youths", I'm going to head the opposite way and keep a wary eye on them. I'm not going to put politically correct ideals before my safety.

I've really had enough of this crap.

  17. I regularly have to attend meetings at the Center on Halsted and I hate going there. You can not get a table because poor underprivileged "youth" who are not from the neighborhood or it many cases even gay are just taking space. The Center is becoming a failure because it has become Englewood North.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Although I do not live in Chicago, Im in that area at least one weekend a month every month. Ive really noticed the increase in youth and a lot of folks who didnt hang there before. Time for some changes!

  19. i blame the center on halsted. its brought nothing but hoodrats and street trash to our neighborhood, everything was fine until they opened their doors!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I actually tried to go to the CoH as a youth. I felt exceedingly uncomfortable there. The center had definitely become a "must be from the south side to fit in" type of schtick and I left, feeling let down and unassisted. I'm sorry, it was all good in theory, but when I come home and can't catch the bus at the Clark street because there's a horde of loudmouth hoodrats hanging outside the DD parking lot looking like their about to stab somebody, I feel pretty pissed. Oh wait, now somebody was stabbed! Did anyone else call that? Anybody?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Quit blaming the bars! The people causing the problems don't even go to the bars. We all know who is causing the problems, when the problems began, and where the troublemakers hang out! What I want to know is why this has been going on for the last few years without the city and or police putting forth more effort. It only took ONE similiar attack to happen downtown and the city and police were all over it!

  22. They got the flashing blue camera on Aldine/Halsted. It's official......"Boystown" and fancy "Lakeview East" is a ghetto.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ....and there's no reason those bars have to be open after 2:00am except for the greed of the almighty $. Gaysploitation at it's finest.

  24. This was going to happen cause many times I have walked out of the bar and watched these young kids at 3 am in the morning just hanging out on the corners causing problems. I think that TUNNY really needs to show that he has the balls to stand up for this issue Gay or not Gay he will not be REELECTED. TUNNY needs to push the NO LOITERING LAW so that kids under the age of 21 need to be off the streets by 11 or 12 at night and back home with there parents or who ever watches these kids.
TUNNY do something about this in your neighborhood fast.

    ReplyDelete
  25. if so many are against the center on halsted because it brings people in and then when they close leaves them hanging, why not band together as a community to fund them to keep them open 24 hours? or at least 24h on the weekends? it seems these particular youths have a desire to be somewhere neutral but we're not offering it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tunney is too busy worrying about keeping food trucks from competing with his precious cinnamon roll business to concentrate on any real issues.

It's a shame this happened, but I'm glad it sounds like one of the offenders was caught. Nice work, Hydrate security!

  27. I agree the problem is not the bars. These kids from the southside don't spend a dime in the restaurants or the bars. They rome the streets trying to intimidate everyone around them. We need to stand together to save our neighborhood.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Keeping the center open 24/7 is not the solution...why should my hard earned money that I donate there be wasted baby sitting these "youth". Center on Halsted will not receive one more DIME from me until they control their kids or end the southside youth programs at the center and Im encouraging all my friends to do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The bars are part of the problem. They aggressively "overserve" the meek in sake of the almighty $ in Obamaconomy knowing most are walking or taking a cab. Once they walk out the door, they're "on their own". We didn't see nuttin', ain't our problem.

I'm not speaking of personal experience, only what I've witnessed.

Shut 'em down at 2:00am or, at least, STOP serving at 2:00am (10:00pm on certain nights for some of the big boys on the block).

    It's out of hand.

  30. .....and let's not forget, as posted, that the VICTIM is recovering (you compassionate gay Chicago people searching for your next $ or pecker). Where's the "fundraiser" for this White guy? Does he have health insurance? Is he un or underemployed? Does HE have caring family? It has to be said!

I'm always wary of being begged for donations to these "organizations" I have no true knowledge of that assume I've got $$ to throw because......I'm White (not German/Polish/French) but just a "White guy" here in Chicago.

So.....let us know the real status/background of this true victim. I might be willing to start my OWN fundraiser, march, parade for him.

Heck, even if he's got health insurance, he would have been forced to give his REAL name/address at the hospital and will be billed for some hefty deductibles. If you really care, let's help him.

  31. So Typical...blame it on the bars, blame it on the gays, blame it on the 2:00 am closing...but by all means, DON'T BLAME IT ON THE GHETTO THUGS who don't even belong there. So typical! "my kid's never been in trouble before" "my kid would never do something like that" my kid's getting his ged" "the bars need to close earlier", "we made them that way" "they're just kids having some fun" GIMME A BREAK!

    ReplyDelete
  32. For those blaming the bars...you're dumb. It's not the bars. If we do that, why don't we close all the straight bars in viagra circle too!?

These problems increased with the erection of the Center on Halsted. I tried to not blame a few bad apples on the place, but this has become increasingly worse. I think it's time many of the locals began complaining a bit louder about shutting it down or ending certain programs.

  33. Anonymous @ 6/21/11, 9:43AM - Comments like that aren't much better than the behavior of the 'ghetto ass thugs'. I'll admit that the CoH doesn't seem to offer much for these kids but a place to hang out away from home and cause trouble. The bars are not the problem nor are the bar hours. The problem stems from the homes and neighborhoods that these kids come from. Call me old school but the only thing to do on a week night after 10pm or the weekend after mid-night is to get into trouble. Go to CoH to possibly better yourself and when it bedtime then GO HOME.

  34. Start enforcing the damn curfew laws and maximize the punishment for repeat offences!!! It's that simple!!!
As a Halsted Street business owner for well over a decade, this is getting worse by the day. It is mostly attributed to the Center on Halsted kids.
Suggestion... lease out a small bit of that Center space. Take the money and open up an branch out south to make it more convenient for those that travel...

Has to be said? Really, why? I'm sure he makes more money than you can imagine, gay men are in the upper part of the middle class. At least most of them are, IF you even know any. And I'm sure he doesn't need MEDICAID to cover his hospital bills like the ghetto thugs do and many many other people in CHA/Sec8 residences do and have...What the hell is your point, besides being a verbal gay basher??? As usual, YOU make no sense. Babble is what you're good at!

" have been forced to give his REAL name/address at the hospital and will be billed for some hefty deductibles. "

Why would he NOT give his real name? You must be familiar with NOT giving your real name and BTW, you are NOT white, you are the same fool posting hatred about white people under "Anonymous"..the lack of proper spelling and grammer gives YOU away..which you should do...

lease a small space on the south side so they have a more convenient place to go.

charge the bastard with attempt of murder cause thats exactly what it is!

Take away the basketball court at The Center... maybe that'll do the trick! Eliminate the attractions that make these animals even want to show up to the facility.

  39. A friend of the security guard told me they asked the guy they caught why he did it and why they were up here. His response: We came to cause trouble. This is the issue. They are either hate crimes or crimes driven by jealousy that the people in this neighborhood WORK for a living to be able to afford the 'toys' they wish they could have. I'm not a fan of this mentality and it shows what capitalism does as the classes drift further apart. The have-nots begin to loathe, more and more, the haves. Add a hatred against the "different" (ie gay) and you get violence. Come on, this part is easy to see, it's what whites did to blacks during segregation. It's just sad that these blacks inflict on others what was inflicted on them. You don't see jews doing that for the trouble they went through. Same goes for the Japanese who were put in camps right here in the US. And same goes for all other minority groups who were, in some way or another, maligned by white society. No, they've all moved past it, got jobs and are doing just fine in society. Even Africans coming from Africa today get jobs. I know a few and they can't stand African-Americans. Kinda weird, isn't it?

  40. The racism and classism in this thread is disappointing. Surely we can work together to find ways to make East Lakeview safer without resorting to "there goes the neighborhood" arguments about "those people." When we speak like that, we sound disturbingly like those who seek to oppress us.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think that all you people that are complaining would go down there and take back the neighborhood instead of expecting others to do it would accomplish everything you want because the bad guys would then leave the neighbor hood, and its really because the people in the neighbor hood allowed this to begin to start with. close the center at 9 pm....curfew at 11 and the police off their lazy asses and do their job, they can patrol that neighbor hood as well as any other.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, people... Seriously? Nobody feeling at least a little offended or at least concerned by the racists, classist undertone of some of the comments here?

    1. Minors should not hangout unsupervised late at night, especially near bar districts. That is true to ALL minors, including white twinks with fake IDs.

    2. Proposing to close the Center on Halsted as a solution is absolutely preposterous. Even if that was the root of all problems here, I for once think the well-being of the GLBT youth (no matter where they are from) is more important than how safe you feel while sipping on your martini. You live in a diverse city. Deal.

    3. Not all the crime in Boystown comes from unsupervised youth. Lots of the vandalism and even the crimes are committed by wealthy white adult addicts (yes, I'm talking about the meth heads), many who also happen to be gay, and many are patrons of bars in the neighborhood. It's not about "us" versus "them." That's ridiculously simple-minded.

    4. Bigotry is deplorable. Bigotry from within an oppressed group toward another is inexcusable and sad beyond words. Some soul searching is highly recommended.

  43. It's not only the Center on Halsted, don't forget about the Howard Brown Youth Center at Belmont and Broadway. And if I'm not misstaken it is also a methedone clinic. I live next to it and they are always outside harassing people at the corner and I have seen them dealing drugs. When we made this part of Lakeview "Boystown" it was safe. Get rid of those two Centers and watch the crime go down and the property values go back up.

  44. Center of Halsted is a piece of junk with and arrogant attitude. According to them everyone else but them are guilty. They are forgetting that the community they are being disrespectful will be the one make them pack and leave the neigborhood.
