| Aeyanuna Rogers: Shot and killed Memorial Day in Hyde Park |
22-year-old Aeyanuna Rogers, a Northern Illinois University graduate, was shot in the head Monday, May 30, 2011, on Chicago's South Side. Rogers was pronounced dead Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
Rogers and her friend, Briane Goodrum, were on a pedestrian walkway on the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive, near the Museum of Science and Industry, when the shooting occurred.
Around 11 p.m., moments before the shots were fired, Rogers and Goodrum saw a group of male troublemakers engaged in a fight. As they turned to leave the area, gunfire exploded.
Police say a 17-year-old boy was also shot. The male shooting victim was shot in the leg.
Aeyanuna Rogers was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
No arrests have been made and police have not released a description of the shooter or shooters.

This is so very heartbreaking. What is wrong with you young people? Why are so violent and angry? That girl had her whole life ahead of her. If she survives she may never be the same. This story really made me sick to my stomach.
ReplyDeleteI noticed channel 7 was careful not to mention the Museum of Science and Industry in their video. Which is odd since the shooting happen very close to that location.
This shooting may be news, but the black thugs who clog up this area during the warmer months ARE NOT! I have not been to Promontory Point Park in years. Once the ghetto lowlife element took over, I stayed away. No place in this city is safe anymore. GOD HELP US THIS SUMMER!
ReplyDeleteI am praying for this young girl, her family, and her friends. May she make a full recovery and her shooter be brought to justice.
ReplyDeleteMan She was running right next to me smh this is beyond sad we can't even go out and have a good time without worrying about a gun fight
ReplyDeleteI truly feel bad for you young folk today. The streets are dangerous and so many young lives are being cut down. This young lady's shooting didn't have to happen.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's black thugs for you! The minute the weather make your balls sweat, these animals don't know how to act.
ReplyDeleteVery heartbreaking story, indeed! The future is very bright for this young lady and I hope she makes a full recovery.
I grew as a kid on Hyde Park Blvd., but due to the outskirt welfare warrior's proximity to Hyde Park... we got the f#%* up out of there and moved downtown when the 2000's hit. They were just always overwhelmingly wrecking havoc at "The Point", Harold Washington Park, and 57th street Beach where the victim was shot. The Woodlawn neighborhood which is HIGHLY INFESTED with gun-toting roaches is just a few blocks away from the Museum of Science and Industry. The black thugs from the Hyde Park/Washington Park border on Cottage Grove and Drexel Ave., make their way into the heart of Hyde Park as well and are responsible for a lot of shootings, muggings and rapes of University of Chicago students also.
Yep, it's going to be one HOT SUMMER!!
Like I've said before, WHENEVER people see a large group of ghetto thugs prowling around they need to call 911 because for sure, trouble is going to start and innocent people will get shot or killed. There is no hope for the generation of ghetto thugs preying on us all. They are truly a lost generation with no morals, respect for human life or their own life and no knowledge of right from wrong. The parents of these parasites should be ashamed of the children they brought into this world and of themselves for not giving them guidance. Tie your tubes, snip your balls. Do us all a favor and take yourself out of the gene pool! Your offspring are a disgrace to humanity.
ReplyDelete"Like I've said before, WHENEVER people see a large group of ghetto thugs prowling around they need to call 911 because for sure, trouble is going to start and innocent people will get shot or killed."
ReplyDeleteTowanda, I know I do. Every time I see a group of young blacks that obviously look like trouble makers, I call the police and alert them ASAP!!
"Tie your tubes, snip your balls. Do us all a favor and take yourself out of the gene pool! Your offspring are a disgrace to humanity."
Well said! Wake me up when the state passes a law that requires hood rat women to be fixed and NEUTERED!!
They just said on the news that this young woman has no brain activity and the family is removing life support. Terrible tragedy, especially as the Beach is supposedly 'closed' at dusk, and yet hundreds of people were at the 57th street Beach at 11pm on 5/20/11.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Aeyanuna Rogers has died from her injuries. My condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.
ReplyDeleteVery tragic and so unnecessary. RIP.
ReplyDeleteSmh! Sad day =(
ReplyDeleteMy condolences to her family.
WATCH - NO Jesse Jackson, NO Al Sharpton, NO complaints from the Black Community other than the Cops being too rough in arresting the perps.
ReplyDeleteAnyway the killers shouldn't even be prosecuted because we don't want anymore Young Black Men handed over to the Prison System.
Mike P., the so-called black leaders seldom open their twisted little mouths when it comes to black on black crime. Jesse and Sharpton only get out of bed when the white man hurts the black man's feelings.
ReplyDeletewe need to bring the military into Chicago and take back our streets restore order living in fear is not something i wanna do. The fact is we automatically start to label these crimes as black crimes but from what i have seen lately is been Caucasians and Hispanics too, So therefore its a youth thing. I know that if we do not do something soon. The consequence's will result in more deaths. We need the government to do something about this it is destroy our city and people .sadly it is a battlefield out here we need help
ReplyDeleteyanni was my friend and we all miss her dearly she was a loving kind person who always was making lame jokes doing funny dances and making ppl smile..we were on the same dance team and hung together. wrong place wrong time is what happened and i pray to God that justice will be served... her chicago and niu family love and miss u...rip yanni " y i outta" rogers...just graduated may 14th 2011
ReplyDeleteBRING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD! These ghetto thugs who killed this lady will NEVER get caught because of the "code of silence", which is really another term for COWARDS!
ReplyDeleteShame on the black community for allowing these ghetto thugs to prey on EVERYONE! Try using your hands for something other than handouts..like picking up the phone and calling 911 every time you see these ghetto thugs gathered, every time you see drug deals, every time you are aware of a crime being committed. The black community lost a good one and it's time to stand up and take YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD back so the whole city doesn't have to deal with these parasites!
This is a travesty!
People need to wake up our kids are dieing young due to cowards and thugs which does not have a color they are every where, Send all killers to Iraq put them in a field and let them battle since they want to kill someone If you make it out you do if not fine. Everyday I tell myself we livve in Chi-IRAQ... Rip yanna and I will pray for your family....
ReplyDeleteFor some reason most of the posts here just seem incredibly racist. There was no mention of race but suddenly its all about black thugs and black cockroaches. What about the CPD, they shut down North Avenue beach but were no where to be seen at 57th Street at 11PM? What is up with that?
ReplyDeleteSorry, but nearly 90% of the violent/deadly crimes that happen in Chicago are by BLACK THUGS! Blacks are the "face of street crime" in this city rather you like it or not.
ReplyDeleteWhere ever there is a group of young blacks, the rest of us cannot relax! #Fact
MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HER FAMILY. HER MOTHER IS A CO-WORKER OF MINE AND HER AND HER ENTIRE FAMILY ARE IN MY PRAYERS. LET HOPE JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED. PEOPLE WE HAVE TO STAY PRAYFUL AND ALWAYS KEEP GOD FIRST.
ReplyDeleteYANNI DIDNT DESERVE TO DIE BUT SHE'S IN A BETTER PLACE NOW...SHE SAID ALL SHE WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE HER PARENTS PROUD BY GRADUATING AND SHE DID...GOD HAS CALLED HER HOME..ITS JUST SAD HOW AND WHEN SHE HAD TO GO...WE LOVE HER AND MISS HER, I JUST HOPE JUSTICE IS DONE WELL BY HER...
ReplyDeleteA beautiful young girl with her whole life ahead of her had her life snatched away by a lowlife animal with no future. For what?! God! I hate ghetto scum!
ReplyDeleteSo tragic to lose this beautiful woman. A good one was taken away while the ghetto thugs who killed her are still out there looking for their next victim. What's wrong with this picture?
ReplyDeleteIf anyone has any information about the shooting please contact me at evranangel4me@yahoo.com or send me a message on facebook at... https://www.facebook.com/angieb201
ReplyDeleteI just read an anonymous individual who said they were running right next to her...We need more information to try and catch whoever has done this to my best friend....
So a gathering of dozens or even hundreds of Blacks is automatically an unsafe and gang-related environment? How disgusting and racist.
ReplyDeleteThis was a horrible and tragic incident and my eyes teared up hearing the story. This girl was innocent and didn't deserve this. The person(s) who were shooting are indeed thugs and should be brought to justice. But do not judge a whole community poorly due to the actions of a few.
Yanni was such a sweet and beautiful person that I called my friend. She could make anyone smile and feel better now matter how she felt. She will truly be missed. We love you Yanni! RIP
ReplyDeleteMost of the comments ARE referring to the "ghetto thugs" ONLY and if you read this blog a lot, you would at least know that is who I am referring to..NOT the entire community. I do however, think it's time the entire black community start doing something, anything, to take their streets back and put these ghetto thugs behind bars. Talk is cheap.
ReplyDelete"So a gathering of dozens or even hundreds of Blacks is automatically an unsafe and gang-related environment?"
ReplyDeleteUhh, yeah! Duh! Do you watch the news, genius?
This is beyond tragic and I'm very angry this happened. I just don't understand what's wrong with our young black men. I was at the Water Tower mall on this day and there were a few black male youths there and I was actually nervous as they were riding the elevator behind me. You just never know if they are going to do something stupid and start harassing you. I then tried to go to Oak street beach and there were a ton of young kids there and a lot of ghetto black guys. We promptly left because again, you just never know what they're thinking. I'm a black woman and I'm nowhere near racists against my own but fact is fact and this has happened too many times in our neighborhood. God help this family as they try and cope with this tragedy. We have to do something about this violence, summer is just getting started and it will only get worse if we don't act now.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous@9:59,
ReplyDeleteKudos to you for telling it like it REALLY is:)
I just saw this beautiful young lady Sunday after ordering my food at McDonalds. I didn't know her at all, but her killing remains close to my heart and I will continue to pray for her family. The devil is a liar and he deserves no attention or a response. My heart was lifted when I noticed the majority of the people refused to comment to them.
ReplyDelete1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
Romans 14:8
For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.
2 Corinthians 5:6-8
ReplyDeleteSo we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
Truly tragic and pitiful.
ReplyDeleteI was also there that night. Please read my blog from the perspective of someone born and raised in Chicago, who just moved back after 14 years. This is no longer "civilization".

I grew up on Chicago's southside and I was home last month. The infiltration of people who were moved out of the "Projects" into neighborhoods is a NIGHTMARE. Unfortunately, they have no idea how to live in a community, in a home or in a neighborhood. Ignorance personified is what I witnessed. Low intelligence, undiagnosed learning disabilities compounded by drugs and alcohol creates human monsters. OMG it is a NIGHTMARE. The city government should either handle the problem or be fired. Mayor Daley was wrong when he decline the assistance of the National Guard dead wrong. Chicago is a war zone if not then why ishe whining for 24/7 personal security. Total crap the citizens need to rise up and demand accountability from the police and city government.
ReplyDeleteRayel, I checked out your blog and am sorry that you were caught up in the middle of ALL that chaos. Your account of that evening was an interesting read. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous@7:15, I totally agree with you. Our elected officials continue to deny us the right to conceal carry in order to protect OURSELVES while they can carry and or have bodyguards/police protection. What a bunch of hypocrites! Daley once called this city Beirut on the lake...seems it still is and I think Beirut may be more civilized at this point. People want to act all "PC" and pretend it isn't happening, they want to sweep it under the carpet and not call it what it is, they want to continue to look at this crime wave through rose colored glasses, thinking it will just go away. Most of us are a whole lot smarter than that. Telling it like it is puts it front and center. Like it or not. Ghetto thugs control this city and more & more of them are joining the ranks of these losers.
Sad that this woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time and some ghetto thug snuffed her bright future out. This really pisses me off! It could happen to anyone of us at any time. Why? Because of those fricking rose colored glasses!
My deepest sympathy to the family. That is a death that didn't have to happen. But until the community stop BLIND MARCHING and actually go to these so called thugs then their doing nothing!!!!! What blind marching means they march today and thats it their done! They talked to no one and took no one into their church. Until Churches, mothers, dads, aunts, uncles, neighbors, all rally together praying together this won't stop. These same thugs grew up in that community so why wait till these young men are thugs to talk to them. When these young men were little boys running the streets these people should've been there. To talk to these boys teaching them a trade, giving advice, something that they could've done to give back to the youth. You never know what these kids been through to grow up to be thugs, criminals, and heartless killers. Pray for those kids as well!
ReplyDeletewe complain constantly about thugs, gangs, shootings, thefts, then we the people in the communities do something,a life lost tragically what post a comment how about patrol your neighborhoods call the police most check your backyard for hostile family members majority of these people come from low income homes sad to say so hold them accountable, check your alderman , if i see it im reporting it no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI lived in New York for a period of time before returning here. I grew up in Hyde Park and after moving back to Chicago, I bought a condo and settled in again. I have to admit I've never seen it this bad! I don't think it's going to continue for much longer, though. The U of C is buying up and closing down everything in sight. They must have a safe environment for the students that come to Hyde Park to live while they are in school... or at least that's the way it used to be. There is a police presence here in the evenings like I've never seen. Last winter, my young nephew was on his way home from work when he was robbed and pistol whipped by two "hoodie" wearing fools. I get mad every time I thought or heard myself say "well thank goodness they didn't shoot him." Then the young brother of my son's friend was shot in the head and killed on 51st & Drexel. I felt that rush of fear and gratitude again. What kind of life is this when you have to be grateful to the bad guys for not killing your loved ones? --
ReplyDeleteWhen praying was banned in our Chicago schools, what happened? our generations need guidance, they need Jesus, im sooooo sick of this devil behavior, all of these killings, may Yanni R.I.P, she is in a better place now, and my prayers go out to her family and friends, all this talk about black quote on quote thugz, where are the people who will change them for the better, now i pray that in the name of Jesus that all thugz and ganstas seek Jesus and that all killings stop in the name o Jesus, Amen!!!
ReplyDeleteWHERE WAS THE CHICAGO POLICE?? The cops know all the troubled, high crime areas so they need to do their jobs and patrol. No one should have to wait on 911 & hope they get there asap--which most times they dont because those cops are elsewhere harrassing innocent citizens when they need to be going after hard core criminals.
ReplyDeleteAnd on top of that, they havent even caught the criminals yet!
Thats what our tax payng dollars support-for the police to "serve & protect"
God bless Aeyanuna Rogers & her family. This is such a horrible tradegy and loss.
She was so gorgeous and intelligent.
Why do people have to do this to my family and friends . i pray for you and will always remeber you ,you where like a sister to me RIP.Yanni
ReplyDeleteThis is such a tragedy! when will this senseless violence ends, come on people! Yanni was like a niece to me, she does not deserved to have her life taken in this manner. Although I know she is in a better place I pray for her family heart to ease the pain. RIP Yanni, you will forever be missed and remembered in our hearts, love you always. Heaven has definitely gained another Angel!
ReplyDeletei went to school with this young lady.....words cannot express the pain i feel however...the communities arent doing enough to prevent this.....and i see a LOT of racist comments on here that i wont speak on but our community isnt making the racism issue better with ignorance i am an artist in chicago and my LIFE GOAL is to change the way kids in chicago are brought up if they cant go to their parents they can come to the center and learn this is a tragedy that should have been prevented i will be speaking about this more on my Youtube Page soon www.youtube.com/DebonairXCertifed
ReplyDeleteSydney A,
ReplyDeleteI NEVER used to be this way. I didn't create it. The ONLY people I may be considered "racist" towards are the ghetto thugs who come in all shapes and COLORS. ALL OF THEM. When my quality of life is disrupted because the parents of these kids don't care to teach them morals, manners, right from wrong or respect for humanity, I don't care what happens to them or what is said about them. They bring it on themselves. All the advancements made by ALL the great people who came way before these ghetto thugs are being washed down the toilet because of their behavior, NOT MINE.
Good for you for trying to help and for trying to do something. Good luck with that. Sadly, I feel these kids are a lost generation because their PARENTS don't care! It's not my job or your job to raise these kids. The parents of this lady did the right things for her and some ghetto thugs, whose parents didn't do the right thing by them, took her away. The black community NEEDS to look at that.
I have lived in Chicago for 70 years and what is happening now with the youths of Chicago is now new. These young people grew up in the gang culture as their grandfathers and fathers were in the gangs of the '60, '70, '80,'90s, up to todays gangs. The city and police have not done anything about gangs in all these years and will not do anything about them now. It is pathetic that the 'good kids' cannot live their lives without their parents wondering if they will return alive. I believe that the National Guard should be called in and do a house to house search for guns and let the chips fall where they may with the rights of the people. The Supreme Court just ruled that the police can kick in your door if they smell marijuana, so why not for search of illegal guns. I believe that law abiding people would not object if that is what it takes to make their neighborhood safe for them and their children.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous@10:36,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you there. Something has to be done about the escalating gun violence. Gun laws in this city DO NOT WORK for the criminal element. Only the innocent abide by the law. Bring in the National Guard and give US the right to conceal carry to protect ourselves NOW!
Every time I see this young woman's face, it is all the more disturbing to me that she was killed and thus her contribution to society snuffed out. I cannot believe that the "code of silence" has prevented any arrests in this case and it makes me very angry!
The police were already in the area two hours before 11:00 PM that night with helicopters flying over near 63rd street and Lake Shore Drive. I've noticed a much heavier police presence in the park since the shooting, something the higher crime north side already has.
ReplyDeleteWe should really try to figure out a way to relocate blacks into a society where they can degenerate all by themselves. It is apparent they cannot be integrated into / are incompatible modern society. Unfortunately there are too many millenia of cultural separation (prior to slavery) to be considered the same. Sorry, it's true.
ReplyDeleteAeyanuna Rogers was my niece. The family loves her and misses her. We need your help! If you have any information, please contact 312.747.8201. Any information you provide will be strictly confidential. Please help us bring the person(s) responsible for her death to justice. She was a beautiful, respectful, and loving young lady! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI hope they catch these evil people but until that "code of silence" is broken, I'm not sure they will. SOMEONE saw who had the gun and they're going the coward route rather than do the right thing. Bless.
ReplyDelete"Comments that include SPAM, profanity, racial epithets or encourage acts of violence, will be deleted."
ReplyDeleteWaiting for half the comments to be deleted...?
A better community and a better Chicago is built upon a foundation of equal parts respect, education, and trust. The majority of the comments on this board should be focused on the tragedy of her unfortunate death; instead, this venue has become a vehicle for vehement and blindly targeted anger. There is no one approach to solving Chicago's community problems; the only approach is an all-hands-on-deck, multi-pronged, integrated effort combining the best of our energies, regardless of race.
ReplyDeleteYour anger here will not help solve the problem, but add to it. Let us move forward and remember Aeyanuna's life and her aspirations, and work together to help all Chicagoans achieve their dreams.
I was raised with her. She was my role model. This is one if the worse things that ever happened to me
