Oprah's store closing after show ends

When Oprah Winfrey finally rides into the sunset, headed for California, her retail presence in Chicago will fade to black.

If you had no idea Oprah has a store at 37 North Carpenter Street on Chicago's Near West Side, you're not alone - neither did I. But at this point, it doesn't really matter.

Oprah's retail store on Carpenter Street will close in June, and her kiosk at The Water Place will shut down at the end of May, said a recent Chicago Sun-Times article.

Yes, boys and girls. The Queen of Talk is taking her toys and shuffling off to OWN land.

Despite the fact that most of the proceeds were donated to various charities, rumor has it, Oprah's retail venture wasn't very profitable.

According to online reviews, Oprah's merchandise was over-priced.

"...I couldn't believe what I saw as I walked around the store. I know the profits go toward the education of underprivileged children, but it still doesn't justify selling stuff you've worn on the show for hundreds of dollars. There were Oprah dog clothes, Oprah makeup bags, Oprah handbags, Oprah snow globes for $145 ... you get where I'm going with this?" said one online critique.

At the end of Lady O's talk show, her Internet store will be closed, as well.

  1. Who cares??? Wonder how many of you ACTUALLY saw Opera mixing in the neighborhood? Shopping in the stores? Actually participating in the city? Raise your hands... not me and I lived two blocks from her. Pretty soon there won't be any evidence that Opera was even here. Bet she changes the name of her studio too. She started out great but became like all the rest...
Her last season is one of her best ever. Most of the audience wasn't even from Chicago anyway.

  2. When Oprah used to tape her show at the WLS studio near State and Lake Streets, I used to see her all time, going back and forth to Dunkin Donuts and Taco Bell. :-)

Oprah and I have had several encounters on Michigan Avenue, too. And here's another fun fact, Lady O' and I are connected through one her long-time staff members, but I'll never tell you which one. :-)

  4. Once, Oprah and I were in the same Michigan Avenue doctor's office. I had a novel to keep me company and she had her body guards. :-)
