4 shot: 8-year-old wounded, man paralyzed, fight erupts at South Shore Hospital

Four people, including an 8-year-old child, were shot on Chicago’s South Side.

At approximately 8:37 p.m., shots were fired on the 7900 block of South Escanaba Avenue near the South Shore and South Chicago neighborhood border.

Police saw a four-door Pontiac speeding away from the crime scene.

Moments later, officers stopped a black Pontiac on the 8000 block of South Crandon Avenue.

At least one occupant in the Pontiac was struck by gunfire. Additional shooting victims, riding in separate vehicles, were also located on the 8000 block of South Crandon Avenue.

Police said a man riding in a Volkswagen Jetta was among the shooting victims located on Crandon Avenue. He was shot in back and paralyzed from the waist down, said police.

The injured man was taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition.

At 8:52 p.m., a fight erupted at South Shore Hospital, where three of the victims were being treated for gunshot wounds to their feet.

Additional officers were called to the hospital to control the angry crowd. The situation was immediately brought under control.

One source said the shooting victims were not being cooperative with investigators.

  1. Hey, Fitz. From what I read online, an 8 and 10-year-old were shot during a BBQ at 7900 South Escanaba in a vacant lot. A large group was there for a memorial for a gang banger name Fiason Harris (not sure about the spelling) who was killed last year. One man was shot in the head.

  4. My grandson got shot in the foot. Its crazy the police was right up there when all the shooting took place and still no one was caught. Instead the police was trying to arrest my family instead of going after the person that did the shooting.

  7. I'm sorry that children get caught up in the stupidity of "adults" around them. I'm sorry that children have to witness this stupidity as well. However, the term "Ghetto" is what is used because of the shootings, the use of guns and the young black ghetto thugs who create this. It is not meant as an area. Perhaps these communities NEED to step to the plate and take their streets back...think about it, your CHILDREN might not get shot and may live to experience life! GANGS SUCK AND SO DO THE PUNKS IN THEM! GROW UP!
