Edgewater resident and loyal Chicago News Report reader, Towanda, served as my eyes and ears at Monday's community meeting with out-going-Alderman Mary Ann Smith, newly elected 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman, and several police captains from various districts.
A lieutenant from the Chicago Police Department’s gang unit, and several mainstream media-outlets, were also in attendance.
Harry Olsterman cut a family trip short and flew in from Florida, to attend the community discussion.
During the meeting, residents discovered 37-year-old deceased murder suspect, Arturo Ibarra, who was shot and killed by police in Rogers Park; 29-year-old Augustin Toscano and 36-year-old Raul Segura-Rodriguez, who were also allegedly involved in the murders at 5841 N. Winthrop; have no ties to the gangs in Edgewater, or the Mexican Cartel.
Authorities said Ibarra and his crew knew the so-called homicide victims, and had done “business” with them before.
The lone survivor of the Saturday, February 26, 2011, double-murder in Edgewater, remains hospitalized and unable to speak.
The anxious, standing-room-only crowd, was reassured that the 48th Ward is the fourth safest region in Chicago. Officials also credited the Edgewater Community Council with inventing community policing.
"Through documentation and pictures taken by Edgewater residents, our community has worked with the FBI to confiscate property where illegal activity has occurred," said Towanda.
Concerned citizens left the community gathering with an invigorated sense of purpose, fueled by a mission to reclaim their streets.
“Silence is acceptance! We were told to call 911 for everything”, said Edgewater resident, Towanda.

Thanks for the shout out Timothy. This is an example of how people can take their neighborhoods back...participation by the residents of the neighborhood sends a message that these parasite are not wanted and to get out. Never underestimate the power of an angry neighborhood! I have attended many meetings like this in Edgewater and all of them always have huge participation and attendance. Residents HAVE to step to the plate and lend their eyes and ears to the CPD because they cannot be everywhere all the time. Bitching and EXPECTING someone else to get it done is not an option!
ReplyDeleteAnd by all means... get out those cameras and start taking pictures of the people who are causing trouble in your neighborhood. If you can install security cameras, that's even better. Police need all the help they can get.

According to the news, there were OVER 400 residents there. This is how neighborhoods get changed.
