Paper Delivery Woman's Car Stolen in Streeterville

This morning, around 5:16 a.m., a newspaper delivery driver's car was stolen.

The woman was delivering papers to 420 East Ohio Street in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood, when someone drove away with her car.

The victim told police she went inside to drop off a few newspapers, when she came out her vehicle was gone.

Authorities described the stolen car as red four-door Pontiac.

Violent Index Crime is down 10.1 percent
    Homicide – down 5.4 percent
Criminal Sexual Assault – down 9.1 percent
    Robbery – down 11.2 percent
Aggravated Assault – down 12.5 percent
Aggravated Battery – down 7.5 percent

    Theft – down 7.2 percent
Motor Vehicle Theft – up 22.4 percent

Who they hell are they kidding? This blog alone shows otherwise and I'm sure Timothy doesn't even get all the crimes committed on a daily basis. This city and ALL it's neighborhoods have become THE WILD WILD WEST. Who gathers these statistics? Where do they get these statistics? They can not possible believe that we, the citizens, are that stupid to believe this....

Towanda, Well according to your statistics you posted here we do see that motor vehicle theft is up 22.4% last year so that would explain this particular incident. :)

No really though, it does seem since I moved back to Chicago from Los Angeles a couple years ago to attend grad school the reports of crime seems more pronounced and frequent. It could be because we have blogs like this that points out everything that is going on in a real time fashion or that the crime has truly spread into areas we typically do not think of having crime issues. The truth may be somewhere in between.

As they say in television news, "if it bleeds, it leads" and no where more than in Chicago do they find those bloody videos. In most cities, the local media does not cover gang bangers killing other gang bangers but here in Chicago they seem to want to do an entire tribute to the "fallen victim of street violence". That story of that 15 year old kid getting killed while sitting in his bedroom was treated as if it were a random act of violence and he was innocently sitting in his room playing Chutes and Ladders. Someone shot into that house with a purpose, to kill someone they did not like. These 15 year old boys are not kids, they're huge these days. Already 6'2" and built like a line backer.

I am trying to not get paranoid living in the city again. I am done with grad school in late April and I will have choices on where I go from here. Being home all day studying for my certification exams and catching news bits here and there that all seem to focus on the gloom and doom of living here is certainly not convincing me to stay near my boyhood home. As a fellow news junkie, I hear ya, it seems pretty crappy out there and worse than it ever was but maybe not. The more we discuss the more we can try to do something about it, who knows that might actually work.

Chicago is at a crossroads, new mayor, newer city council, perhaps this will be the time we do see some positive change not only on the north side but all over the City of Chicago. I do not want to move but soon I'll probably start having kids so I must think about their lives and their safety. Maybe I can get a nice cabin up in the mountains of the Adirondacks in northern New York.

I certainly hope so. I miss the good old days in Chicago.

  5. Lakefront & Timothy, I truly miss the good old days of Chicagoas well. Only those who have been here for a very long time or who have been raised here, understand that the current state of affairs in Chicago IS NOT how it used to be. Didn't they used to have a Gang Task Force? That seemed to help with the gang situation. Perhaps our current Mayor is just plain tired but "tired" means lapses and that's what I see happening. I was gone from the city for several years with a job in Albuquerque, but longed to come back to the city that is both my home & heart. Needless to say, I have been shocked at what is happening in this city and sometimes, want to leave. BUT, I will be damned if I will let these bangers drive ME out! They're the ones that either need to "shape up or ship the hell out". Since the police are outnumbered and out gunned, I think it's the citizens of this cities responsibility to be their eyes and ears and REPORT ALL and ANYTHING that looks suspicious. Detroit is a perfect example of what happens when there is "white flight" and I will do my part to not let that happen. I also think the city NEEDS to hire a department to investigate welfare fraud, CHA/SEC8 fraud, medicaid fraud and any other fraud that scammers can scam the city on. Hold landlords responsible for their tenants. If they are renting to known drug dealers, prostitutes and gang bangers, than confiscate their property. After all, the federal government does it with drug busts. Doing nothing puts us ALL in peril!

  6. towanda, I can remember when you could walk all over the north side without a care in the world! I literally used to walk from Uptown to downtown, hang out all night, and catch the bus back home. There were times when I used to spend the entire weekend traveling along the lakefront, flying my kite, walking my dog, jogging, walking, reading a book, and NEVER had to look over my shoulder.

Now, some parts of the north side are starting took like 47th Street! And I'm not being sarcastic.

I recall a gang crimes unit. Washington disbanded the CHA Police. Bryne disbanded the CTA Police.
