Hyde Park Restaurant Where Obama Dined, Robbed at Gunpoint

Not long ago, I was telling loyal reader Towanda, that I never hear about crime in my old neighborhood, Hyde Park. Then she sent me an email. Looks like I spoke too soon.

According to a Chicago Sun-Times article, a string of south side Hyde Park businesses have been robbed; including Windy’s Deli at 1013 1/2 East 53rd Street.

On January 22, 2011, Windy’s Deli was robbed for the seventh time, said owner Chotipradit to the Chicago Sun-Times. The small business owner was in the middle of taking an order when a gunman stuck a pistol in his face and ran off with hundreds of dollars in proceeds.

When President Obama lived in the area, he often stopped at the local restaurant for a bite to eat.

An implant from Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood, who now lives in Hyde Park, said she is afraid to be on the streets after 6:30 p.m.

  1. "Windy’s Deli was robbed for the seventh time,"..when stores, deli's like this one, grocery stores etc; close up shop, than they'll be a "food desert" and complain in front of camera's that they have nothing in their neighborhoods. The sad thing about that, is the innocent people suffer too. The south side of Chicago used to be a mecca for shopping when all the businesses and factories were there, and while the factories left, the people remained. Hmmm, why did it dry up? IF we were allowed to"protect" ourselves, these ghetto thugs would think twice about robbing stores...ya never know what kind of gun would be behind the counter. I like the idea they have in movies where the gun is rigged under the desk and can be fired without the robbers even knowing what hit them:) Way too many movies:) I can just about bet why the president and his family don't come "home" very often.

  2. As a child, my parents used to take me and my siblings to the Hyde Park movie theater at 5238 South Harper Avenue. The theater closed some time in the late 80s, early 90's.

When it reopened, people were excited to have the movie house back, but that excitement soon faded.

Thugs from outside the neighborhood began loitering in front of the theater, starting fights, stealing from local businesses, and defacing property with graffiti.

The theater was shutdown again. To this day, the theater remains closed.

  3. I've been embarrassed by the stores renaming themselves Obama and all the cheap t-shirts, hats, and Obama watches since that guy got elected. We are a disgrace as a country.
