From the Chicago Sun-Times: Mayoral hopeful Rahm Emanuel is promising to put 1,000 more police officers on Chicago’s streets by putting cadets in desk jobs, cracking down on medical abuses and renegotiating a policy that allows officers to take 365 sick days every two years.
But he’s not about to “divide the city” by realigning police beats or reallocating officers from lower-crime districts to those that need more protection.
Emanuel is promising to dump Police Supt. Jody Weis... click HERE and read the entire story!

Right on Rahm! Perhaps we can curtail some of the crime going on daily in this city. Do I care about the fricking deficit? Hell no! I care about being beat up, mugged, or shot. Take care of the crime first and the rest will follow. I'll be at the mayoral meeting today to hear what you, Chico and CMB have to say.
ReplyDelete"I'll be at the mayoral meeting today to hear what you, Chico and CMB have to say."
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to tell me what was said.
Here's the report. The mayoral candidate meeting was interesting and informative. Chico was fiery, seemed determined and said he would put 2000 police back on the streets, although he NEVER said how or when he would do that. Rahm, a bit subdued but also determined and clearly the only one, in my opinion, with the experience and willfulness to make a difference in Chicago. Also very determined to make ALL the neighborhoods vital. Chico, Rahm & CMB seemed pretty focused on education and the kids. Rahm mentioning that parents NEED to participate and will offer incentives to get them involved and hold teachers and principles accountable. Miguel does not have the experience but talked a great deal about neighborhoods and the importance of them. CMB, interesting character. She mainly talked about all her experience, not much on crime, not very convincing on education. Also had our state rep there and she talked about Gabby, her friend and the conference call with 800 legislative members. mentioned that WE ALL need to think before we speak..meaning political parties and the media. Much more but that's the basics
ReplyDeleteThanks for that report!
ReplyDeleteEmanuel is clearly the top dog in this race. If Carol Moseley-Braun weren't so... shady, she might be able to give Emanuel a run for his money. I can't wait to see how this one plays out.
I believe that if tell someone you are going to move a mountain, you better be able to them how!
ALL politicians have good intentions and hopes when they are running. Too bad we fall for it sometimes and after they're in, they see that mountain is way to big to get over. Did you know Rahm was a ballet performer? He's really into keeping the arts and music in schools. I think that's cool!
ReplyDelete"Did you know Rahm was a ballet performer?"
ReplyDeleteNo! I did not! Impressive!
According to a comment on SCC, the 2000 more police are actually police shifted from other duties.
ReplyDeleteAs wonderful as Rahm sounds, I can't support him. I can't support someone who supported NAFTA and shady financial deals that led us to "today's" economic crisis. :(
In the past, I heard many candidates say "I will make (all) neighborhoods vital. I will make parents, teachers and principals accountable." My questions are "How?", "How much money is needed?" and "Who pays for it?".
Parents choose to have kids. Why must parents be bribed to be involved with their own children?
"Parents choose to have kids."
ReplyDeleteMy sentiments exactly! The sad reality is that many young girls get pregnant, the fathers are no where to be found or even named on the birth certificate, they can't take care of the kids so the grandparents and maybe even the great grandparents end up raising those kids. Absentee parents are what most of these kids know. I totally agree it's the parents responsibility to raise these kids properly BUT "babies having babies" seems to be the norm. Rahm didn't mean the parents would get rewarded monetarily, he meant the more parents involved with their children's education, the more benefits the school would see in perks the mayors office would give that school. The program is called "Race to the top". Because of the limited timeframe for all the candidates, he couldn't explain it thoroughly. He said for "us" to check his website. As far as enhancing the neighborhoods, he mentioned using TIF for exactly what it was meant for. That the neighborhoods that didn't need it, wouldn't get it, only the neighborhoods that REALLY needed it..like the south side, which he referred to as a "food desert"(so did Miguel)..just an example. I could only think of Uptown and the Target there with the "wilson yard", which was a TIF thing. Rahm might have voted for NAFTA BUT, had he not been working with Clinton, that wouldn't have happened. As far as the banks go and the current state of the economy, I'm not sure exactly what his roll was in that.
Rudy, I must say, they ALL had good plans for moving this city forward. Do they all have the capabilities to do that? I'm not so sure. We are in a mess here and, for me, Rahm seems to have the experience and capabilities to do that. Though I really liked Chico as well, he would focus more on schools & education, which is a great thing, but not the only problem in our city. Both Rahm & Chico would get rid of the excess waste within the CPD by eliminating a "deputy having a deputy having a deputy" kinda thing, if that makes sense. Police would not be transfered from one area to another area, there would be more "beat police" and the police would be more visible. They both would also pay for this by eliminating the excess waste in the various departments within the city, by maybe consolidating departments..shrinking government came to mind. I'm sure I heard a lot more but after 21/2 hours of listening to all the candidates including the city clerk & treasurer candidates and state reps, I can's seem to remember everything...must be the "color" of my hair;) This is what stood out for me.
"Race to the Top" sounds like more of the same favoritism to certain schools.
ReplyDeleteClinton & Rahm benefited financially from NAFTA. Both NAFTA and the current economic crisis have Rahm involvement.
I will vote for Patricia or William. :)
"I will vote for Patricia or William." :)
ReplyDeleteAnd that Rudy is why we have freedom of choice:) I do think that Chico has more experience than Patricia or Williams so be careful not to waste your vote. I was here when "Richie" throw his hat into the ring and divided the vote between Washington & Byrne putting Washington in office
Washington=33%
Byrne=30%
Daley=30%
Byrne had that in the bag UNTIL Richie.
towanda,
ReplyDeleteI understand "freedom of choice". Based on their past, a vote from me for Chico or Emanuel is wasted. Both will say (or have said/implied) "more police, more programs". Today's urban terrorism is a war and must be fought like a war. More police worked in the past, but that was a different era in crime fighting.
I was here in 1983 too. Daley's vote splitting wasn't the only reason Washington won.
Bryne had too many crises and scandals, which included the Chicago Public Schools' Strike (1980), Firefighters' Strike (1980), Chicago Fest Boycott (1982) when Byrne replaced Michael Scott on the school board, with an anti-busing White, and her embrace of the Evil Cabal (i.e. Burke, Vrdolyak, Mell).
Because of the above named items, the "Lakefront Liberals" and Minorities shifted their support to Washington.
Also in 1983, we had a primary and general election system of voting which differs from today's non-partisan 50% + 1 vote election.
Unlike Mayor Daley II, Bryne and Washington understood the importance of respecting the police and treating crime like crime.
Washington (and probably Byrne too) never allowed certain Black Preachers & Phleger to take over the city. Both never allowed constant out of control crime on State Street and Michigan Avenue.
I could ride the el anytime to and from those areas too. :)
I bet, the north side was pretty safe in their areas. If it wasn't, towand and Timothy correct me. :)
To be fair, I will pray and meditate about my upcoming vote. :)
