At 3:16 a.m., Chicago police officers were at a South Shore home on the 7700 block of South Burnham Avenue investigated a drug related call. Apparently, a 93-year-old grandmother called police after she smelled "drugs".
The situation began to escalate when family members became combative with the officers on the scene. Twice, a female officer called for backup. “We’re in a large family home and everyone is a little too excited here”, the officer told police dispatch, with a hint of urgency in her voice.
Within in minutes, at least six additional squad cars flooded the street in front of the South Burnham Avenue address. But the show of force wasn’t enough to intimidate at least one occupant in the home. Around 3:25 a.m., the same female officer who called for back up, deployed her taser and a suspect was placed under arrest.
The end? Not quite.
At 3:57 a.m., another 911 call was placed from the home on Burnham Avenue. "If we have to go back there, we are locking up everyone. This time the police are gonna act like the police," said one officer.
The second batch of officers arrived around 4:09 a.m. From what I was able to gather, the family members believed the first group of officers used excessive force.
