Charles McCain Jr., missing since Oct 2. |
Some people read. And some people READ! I am a READER! I pay attention to what's being said and the moment I spot something fishy, my somewhat rusty antenna pops up!
Whenever I find a missing persons article, I either write a news blurb or link an existing article to my ever-growing Chicago's Missing Persons section. But when I read the TribLocal piece on Charles McCain Jr.'s disappearance, I knew the status quo would not do.
Before I start my rant, let's lay out the important details.
Charles McCain Jr. is 57-years-old, 6'4", approximately 180 lbs, and has gray hair. He suffers from depression and schizophrenia. At the time of his disappearance, he wasn't carrying any ID, and according to the police, McCain isn't able to find his way home on his own. He was last seen on October 2, 2010, leaving the Thresholds Group Home, located at 1102 N. Austin Blvd.
If you have seen this man, please contact the Oak Park police department at 708-386-3800.
Okay. Let's back this train up for a minute. Who told the police McCain couldn't find his way home, alone? Was it the people running the group home? If so, why did they knowingly let a man, who is easily confused, go to the store alone - without any ID?
I’d also like to add, that as someone who frequently monitors his police radio; people are always coming up missing at Thresholds. Always.
Can you smell what this blog is cooking?
According to the TribLocal article, Thresholds employees were trying to teach McCain how to live on his own. So they graciously allowed a confused man to go to the store by himself.
At the risk of being sued... that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!
Number one, schizophrenia is not a disease that gets better. And most of the drugs used to treat its symptoms are extremely debilitating. The drugs may quiet the voices and soften the delusions, but the patients are often left lethargic.
Number two, why didn't someone shadow McCain as he went to the store? If I were dealing with a patient who is easily confused, and is on medication that might cloud his judgment, I would never be careless enough to allow said patient to saunter off to the store, alone!
Someone really needs to do a deeper investigation into this story, because what I‘ve heard so far, doesn't pass the smell test.
