Report: Edgewater nursing home residents stranded in heat for 7 hours?

For several hours, more than one hundred people at a North Side, Edgewater neighborhood nursing home were left in Chicago's sweltering temperatures, according to information gathered from various police dispatch reports.

On Tuesday, June 17, 2012, a power outage was reported on the 5500 block of North Kenmore Avenue, around 5 p.m.

The Bryn Mawr Care senior housing facility is located on the same block, at 5547 North Kenmore Avenue.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police were notified that the nursing home had been without power since “1700 hours”… that’s 5 p.m. in military time.

About an hour later, at 10:56 p.m., a concerned Chicago police officer made an urgent request for several CTA cooling buses. By this time, according to our documentation, the residents had been without power for six hours.

When police dispatch couldn’t give the officer an estimated time of arrival for the buses, the officer said, “tell them we have 107 people who need cooling buses”.

Shortly after midnight, an officer at the scene said three cooling buses were being loaded at Bryn Mawr and Kenmore, but some of the displaced residents from the nursing home were going to spend the night inside the Edgewater Presbyterian Church at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue.

Unless there’s a discrepancy our timeline, it appears the residents were stuck in the heat for more than seven hours.

Chicago News Report contacted Bryn Mawr Care by telephone, but there was no answer.

  1. That is something that I hear all of the time, that Dispatch can't get ETAs on the cooling buses when there are fires, etc... Often the wait is excessive. CTA needs to get their act together on this.

As for why this place went with out power for so long and no one reported it, that should be looked into as a criminal investigation. That is just insane. Where is ComEd in all of this. They have been slow to get power restored all summer during extreme heat times.

  2. There are alot of seniors and "artists" up there. All I know is that where I'm from we helped our senior neighbors. We looked out for them. We learned from them. We shoveled sidewalks in front of abandoned buildings (a.k.a. firehouses in Chicago) so they could get to the bus stop or the store.

These "liberals" here care more about themselves and their "art". Pitiful. Could they have invited any of their neighbors in this "neighborhood" over to their home to cool off? It's funny how they love "diversity" here but are scared to death of each other. They'll take pictures of the "seniors" and post them on the internet though. Oddly bizarre.

    2. Its not a population of independent seniors and artists.
Its primarily low income people with some type of mental health issue but that also includes our senior citizens.

Im sure the facility and its residents will truly appreciate you donating your time, money and effort on their behalf.

Go ahead, put your money where your mouth is. And dont forget to compassionately assist those residents when you see them begging in Bryn Mawr.

  3. Nursing homes are hellholes, criminals nowadays take those very easy changing diapers/wipe the butt CNA courses in order to get close to elderly victims.
They rob them blind, abuse them and even sexually molest them.
Elderly people often die with nothing but tattered hand me downs and all of their valued possessions have been sold for nefarious means.
If you love your parents, take care of them or pull the plug, don't put them in a nursing home.

  4. @Anon 1:56 Amen, you are so right..One does not want to end up in a nursing home, especially in Chicago! Even the better nursing homes in Chicago have serious problems. My parents moved out of Chicago to a town in Wisconsin. When they finally required nursing care, they received the best.
