Mayor Emanuel sends children to U of C Lab Schools, snubs public schools

U of C Lab Schools in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.
If there is nothing wrong with Chicago's Public School System, why is Mayor Rahm Emanuel sending his children to a private school?

According to a CBS Chicago news exclusive, Mayor Emanuel is sending his children - Leah, Ilana, and Zach - to University of Chicago Laboratory Schools at 1362 East 59th Street, in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.

Apparently, it's the same school President Obama's daughter, Sasha and Malia, attended before Barack began president.

The U of C Lab Schools teaches pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, and tuition runs between $14,000 to nearly $25,000 a year.

  1. of course he did; isn't sending your kids to CPS like giving up on them? this reminds me of my upper-middle class friends who staunchly refuse to move to the suburbs because they think they're superior or some such nonsense; they'll soon find out that they don't make enough $ for private schools, and the suburbs are where peaceful, normal, non-savages live. full disclosure: i've lived in chicago and the suburbs for most of my life; i choose to stay in a suburb that's adjacent to Chicago, and rent out (and am planning on purchasing more) property in chicago. i've lived in other awesome cities (SF, London), so don't accuse me of being some boonie-suburbanite.

  2. In my lifetime, I don't recall Chicago Mayors Daley I, Bilandic, Byrne, Washington, Orr (2 days), Sawyer and Daley II ever saying "I will send my children to Chicago Public Schools."

How can a mayor have first hand knowledge, if his/her children are in private school?

  3. Oh c'mon. The Obama princesses go to private school as well. Reality check - if parents have $, they usually want to send their kids to the best schools possible. And what about security? I'm assuming Rahm's spawn have 24/7 security, which I am sure is easier to manage at UC as opposed to a CPS sh*thole.

  4. Some Chicago Public Schools are good, while some private schools are bad. :|

  5. Nice to see that Rahm understands how bad the CPS schools are. Can hardly blame him for sending his own kids to the Lab School. He can afford it, after all.

However, for those of us who live in the city and cannot afford private schools, Hello Suburbs!

Yeah, I can't figure out why the census says Chicago's population & tax revenue is falling either.

  6. My kids went to Ogden for a couple years back in the 80's and it was a great CPS. Parents have to be involved with their children's education NO MATTER where they go to school. If they aren't than their children won't care and NO school can change that, public or private. It's not about the teachers, it's about parents actively participating in their children's education. PERIOD!

  7. According to the address which is commonly listed for the mayor's house, he lives just a few blocks from Lakeview High School.

Lets see him send then to Lakeview and then report back to us on the safety of Chicago Public Schools.
