North Avenue Beach, 1600 North Lake Shore Drive, was closed abruptly on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2011.
Officials said the beach was shutdown due to several cases of heat-related illnesses. Others say the beach was closed because authorities feared a violent flash mob would create a chaotic scene; one the Chicago Police Department was ill-equipped to handle.
Although one Twitter user claims the beach was closed because of the presence of street gangs, he didn't post any pictures or video to backup his claim claims; nor did he cite any specific gang-related incidences.
"For those of you complaining about the north ave beach in #Chicago closing yesterday, you can thank the gang bangers for that," said one Twitter user.
This morning, city officials faced the task of cleaning up after yesterday's event. North Avenue Beach was littered with garbage: soda cans, food wrappers, and various debris were left behind at the beach.
i was at north ave beach on memorial day and i didn't see any gangbangers. so i don't know where those lies are coming from. must be some racist agenda.
ReplyDeletehighs in the 80s don't generally cause beach closings. that area has been dealing with wildings for a while now, and last summer North Ave beach had plenty of gang issues. cop aquaintances have basically confirmed that there were too many people causing issues (not just at the beach, but in the surrounding areas as they left the beach) and not enough cops.

ReplyDeleteWLS listeners say there was what they called a "large gangbanger element" at the Oak Street and North Avenue beaches.
Listeners report being at the beach, and seeing dozens of gang bangers pushing people off their bikes. Another listener says those causing havoc were not dressed for the beach and looked like "bad elements."
I jogged from Fullerton to Oak and back just before they closed North Ave. All I saw was scores of happy young people of all colors, shapes and sizes having fun and looking fantastic. I didn't even notice any rude behavior, much less violence.
ReplyDeleteI was at North Ave. Beach for about 30 minutes. I didn't see anyone causing trouble. All I saw was people enjoying the weather.

ReplyDeleteI was watching the 6 o'clock news and from the live report, I had never seen so much gang flashing, young afro-Americans dressed in RED, I was surprised they kept the live report on for so long.
ReplyDeleteNo other beaches were closed, Not Montrose, not Foster or Hollywood. Guess North Ave. was the ONLY beach to hit "88" degrees?! Yea right. 1995 saw one of the worst heat waves in Chicago history where around 800 people DIED from heat related illnesses and the beaches weren't closed than. Something very suspicious about this for sure.

But the real story - the CPD police forum/blog, where talk of the dispatches for complaints/help at the beach were put at bottom priority(ignored) and calls for more squad cars denied. Those posts aren't going to last long. Rahm is looking more diminutive in city administration. But... he was busy working on the backroom Casino deal for Chicago on the weekend, happy?
ReplyDeleteThe beach was closed because gangbanging thugs show up and showed out. There were multiple robberies and assaults at North Ave. Beach. When the crowds left the beach, the ghetto thugs attacked, robbed, and molested people on Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and anyplace else the roaches could get to. I am really sick of this mess. Emanuel is a joke. This was his first test as mayor and he failed BIG TIME!

My mother who lives near Oak street beach said they were allover the place along the lakefront, loitering around the bus stops on Lakeshore drive and Michigan Ave. Lots of black thugs in long white t-shirts wilding in MASSIVE groups. Remember folks, Cabrini-Green row houses on Chicago Ave and that section 8 Old Town building on North Ave/Sedgewick is just a "walk in the park" away from these animals. They can make their way to the beaches in the blink of an eye!

All along W Chicago Ave from Michigan Ave to Dearborn there were packs of black youths (12-18 y/o) traveling in packs of 15-50, loitering, swearing, littering and pervasively using the N-Word like it was CO2 being expelled during expiration. The black youths were intimidating (intentionally) to nearly everybody who crossed their path. Hundreds were congregating near the McDonalds simply throwing their trash in the street and sidewalk. The pack travelling is not a normal, typical way civilized people commute - for example, never have I seen so many packs or groups of people walking those streets or sidewalks. It simp;ly does not happen unless there is an organized rally or road race.
ReplyDeleteI saw a pack of black kids steal the hat off a white man crossing the street with his female friend (The pack was going south on Michigan Ave across Huron on the East Side of Michigan Ave).
A pack of black youths entered the Walgreens across from the Hard Rock Cafe swearing and yelling and laughing at each other, completely oblivious to the civilized people in the store. The "N-Word" count coming from these kids was >15. Throughout the streets I counted over 50 "N-Words" all coming from black kids. Obviously this word means nothing to black youths so for once should we stop pretending it means anything to them - it's just an excuse for them to start a fight!
The unfortunate truth is that thousands of rowdy, foul-mouthed, inconsiderate, mobs and packs of teenagers overtook the city streets and sidewalks littering, and loitering. The unfortunate truth is that about 100% of these uncivilized kids were black and contribute to the stereotype that leads to racism. Of course only these two beaches were not closed due to the weather. And of course the 4th of July Fireworks were not cancelled due to financial reasons, but due to fear of future mobs of poorly behaved black youths overtake the city intimidating the civilized and the tourist industry.

There is no way these ghetto thugs should be ALLOWED anywhere near the Gold Coast or north side beaches and the CPD better start dispersing them EVERY time they gather because trouble is coming. When they don't, they send a message to these mentally challenged ghetto thugs that their behavior is acceptable.

Before you speak and criticizes someone, make sure you read ALL the articles. At least than you will see that is not what I mean. Go ahead, go find my definition of ghetto thug in the many articles on this blog. I have ALWAYS made the distinction between ghetto thugs and the black community. You can believe it or not. My conscience is good.
Haha I don't care, I will definitely refer to these roaches as BLACK THUGS because thats what they are! These future inmates have absolutely NO REGARD for human life! They have no home training, and act no different than the residents of the Lincoln Park Zoo! Wait, I take that back... the animals in captivity actually have a lot more class than the animal thugs on the streets. Excluding ghetto thugs and lack of police for a moment, there are other reasons to avoid a greater downtown beach.

In no particular order, the reasons are: crowds (How are "you" going to "enjoy" a beach, with "everyone" walking around/on you?), pigeons'/seagulls'/dog' waste, E-coli (even when the beaches aren't closed), poopy baby diapers (ewwww!), polluted water, people's urination, defecation, smelliness & rudeness and the usual lack of showers (Do "you" really want to smell like a beach for hours, when it will take your hours to reach home?) Gross!

ReplyDeleteAs a middle aged man, I ENJOYED Chicago's beaches & lakefront for years in my youth. I ENJOYED it with MANY races and EVERYONE pretty much respected others.

The facts are simple and undeniable for all to see > it is rapidly becoming very dangerous out there. Tragically, THE stereo-type of WHO is in the perpetrating groups fits. In this politically correct nation we are WARNED to not profile or stereo-type people.
So HOW IS THAT WORKING FOR YOU when you hit the beach and the 'urban element' shows up in groups ? Tell Jesse Jackson I will stereo-type and profile EVERY group of young black males dressed 'hip hope' as dangerous potential perpetrators. EVERYTIME ALL THE TIME, NO EXCEPTIONS
