Starting July 1, 2011, fewer Illinois AIDS patients will be able to afford their life-saving medications.
Under the Illinois Department of Public Health's new guidelines, AIDS patients earning $32,670 a year or less, will qualify for financial assistance.
Currently, individuals making $54,450 or less, receive help with paying for their AIDS medications through the state and federally funded AIDS Drug Assistance Program, or ADAP for short.
According to the Windy City Times, AIDS medications can cost $18,000 or more, per year.
Because of the new income requirements, it's estimated that one hundred Illinois AIDS patients will be forced to stop taking their medications.

ReplyDeleteYou know what? A lot of gay people have AIDS because they made a choice to get infected. Why should taxpayers pay for their stupidity?
ReplyDeletethese are some of dumbest comments i have ever read. anywhere!
ReplyDeleteTrolls, ignore them. If those comments were their serious opinion, their stupidity will probably kill them a lot faster than AIDS would anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat bothers me so much about this happening is that our state would rather cut the budget than grow a pair and negotiate with the drug companies that charge impossible amounts for AIDS drugs and lobby against the escalation of generic status in what is clearly a deadly crisis. They can spend billions at the airports strip searching us but they can't do that? Horrible.
I suppose I probably didn't mean what I said.
ReplyDeleteI was robbed at gunpoint yesterday, and right now I would like to see E V E R Y F**KING BODY on Earth DEAD DEAD DEAD (It's called H A T E).
People with Aids were an easy target; I'll hopefully regain my mental equilibrium sometime in the near future.
So the choice is between dying and quitting their jobs in order to qualify. But there's always bushels of money for Halliburton, Libya and the war profiteers.
ReplyDeleteYes, they should start tackling drug companies that profiteer. Blagojevich tried to get some deal going where seniors could get their drugs cheaper from Canada but the federal government under Bush thwarted his efforts. Can't be helping our citizens who are sick, can we, unless someone gets a piece of the action.
There's been all these endless AIDS fundraisers over the years, runs, walks, celebrity parties, various organizations, etc. So what are they doing with the money? Will they step in and help pay some of the costs in cases like this?
Seems like the state wouldn't save all that much money anyway in this case. There's bigger ticket items that could be looked at.
To the ignorant commenters, perhaps you should do some research on HIV?AIDs to see just what started this pandemic. Here's a start;
ReplyDeleteThe earliest known positive identification of the HIV-1 virus comes from the Congo in 1959 and 1960 though genetic studies indicate that it passed into the human population from chimpanzees around fifty years earlier.[11] A recent study states that a strain of HIV-1 probably moved from Africa to Haiti and then entered the United States around 1969.[22]
AIDS IS NOT just a gay desease and your comments truly show your complete lack of education and ignorance.
Our government can support people in foreign countries with TAXPAYER money BUT CANNOT SUPPORT IT"S OWN PEOPLE? We can bomb the hell out of a country and than turn around and rebuild it BUT can't take care of our OWN people? We can send relief efforts to the WORLD to help them in a disaster BUT can't take care of our OWN people? There is something very sad and concerning about this picture. How Pathetic and hypocritical our country is. Shameful!
Mike P, I'm sorry that happened to you. It sucks I'm sure and I understand your frustration in your first comment, BUT wishing someone dead just isn't cool no matter how upset you are because of someone else.
ReplyDeleteDid you report it? What happened?
I'm sorry to say that the city I love seems to be overrun with Ghetto Thugs who expect to have what we all work hard for, and are willing to hurt or kill someone to get it rather than actually work and earn it.
WE NEED TO PASS BILL HB148 PERIOD! I'll take lessons, I'll learn how to shoot a gun and I'll be better equipped to protect myself as well. I have many friends in many states where they are allowed to "conceal carry" and ALL have told me that crime has GONE DOWN in those places because basically, these ghetto thugs are cowards and when faced with the possibility that their victim may have a gun, they run home and change their tightie whites!
Mike P, when you wish everyone dead, you are including yourself too. :(
ReplyDeleteHating anyone is just giving the evil robbers power over you. :(
Towanda,
ReplyDeleteThere's overwhelming evidence that HIV is a mutation of PIV (HIV for primates) and was created by carelessly generating the polio vaccine in the kidneys of chimpanzees in Central Africa (it is a medical no-no to breed antibodies in a species with similar DNA, for the very reason I mentioned it).
Way off topic, but very interesting none the less.
Benn, it is interesting, I mentioned something similar in my first comment. It's amazing to me, that after ALL these years, people are still so ignorant and uneducated about AIDS. There are more cases of AIDS in Africa than anywhere else in the world... amongst amongst straight people. They just don't get that it is NOT just a gay desease. It's beginning to look like stupidity rules in the USofA.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try my best to minimize this being graphic, lol:
ReplyDeleteOne widely underplayed and lesser known cultural routine in most of Africa, is "drying" a woman before sex. Both male and female partners commonly prefer it, and that routine to them is like french kissing to us. The bad news is that it spreads HIV much easier, and they've had about as much luck trying to get people to discontinue the practice as we have had getting teenagers to use condoms.
It is unthinkable to most Americans and Europeans, but it has been the common practice in Africa for as long as anyone has known. It is just too awkward of a thing for Bono to mention in one of his speeches, I guess.
Benn...Too much info;)
ReplyDeleteBenn, thanks for the information. :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe some pictures are posted online. :)
